Hey all

For the last week and half i have noticed when i brush the brake pedal lightly and come to a composed stop the braking seems very juddery and the steering wheel shakes quite violently from side to side. Noticeable far more on gradual braking say when coming upto a roundabout rather than sharp stopping.

Just doesnt feel right to me....

Normally this is a sign of worn front discs yes? I have had a visual check on them and they dont seem like they have an excessive lip or seem to have any flat spots.....
The brake pads themselves have about 3mm left. Could that be contributing? Whats this brake fade term ive seen bounded about?

Only have records in the history of the rear discs being changed at around the 50k mark....car now on 89k so could it be the original discs still on the car? Surely not? Unsure

I think i will replace both so any advice where i can get some decent but good value for money discs + pads? Would quite like some grooved discs as they will make my car look even more sexy than she already is LOL

Dont want to spend the earth though.

Would eurocarparts have some? Their website says Pagid 'vented' discs - same as grooved? Pressumably you have to buy one for each side? So around £90 for both.....

Quick replies appreciated then i can pop upto ECP today

Thanks

Have a look through your alloys at them to see if they are smooth or not, could be a ball joint on its way out too. have a feel of the inside of the disc too.

If they feel rough or rusty they probily need doing.

Thanks, balljoints were replaced at around the 77K mark.

GSF do standard Brembo discs for about £30 each. There are lots of grooved 306 discs on eaby.

Ive used Black Diamond pads front and rear, much better than oem, no squeel, and about £55 for fronts, £30 for rears (pairs) so not too pricey.

So set about changing these today - more of a pig job than it had to be due to me being a complete novice and taking the caliper off the carrier and snapping one of the sliding pin bolts whilst it was still in the slider! Doh

Nothing a drill didnt sort out though.....pads on the nearside had loads of meat on them so i was a bit dubious if replacing these parts would make a difference.

Eventually got the new parts fitted....and just been for a test drive.

First impressions are although bedding in period = crap brakes, the steering wheel wobble seems to be gone and the rough pedal feel also gone. Im guessing a disc was warped to cause those symptoms?

Will update after a few days driving to see if its sorted it properly but initial signs are good....Plus the calipers havent fallen off yet so i might not be as useless as i first thought either! LOL

Cheap discs warp all the time, usually happens with spirited driving, cheap discs just can't handle the heat.

Not at all surprised to hear that's fixed your problem. Although I'm suprised at your crap brakes. In what way are they poor? Does it require a lot of effort to push the pedal or does the pedal travel a long way before stopping?

Bedding in period doesn't usually affect the actual brake performance that much.

I also assume you didn't undo the brake hose when taking the calipers off? I.e. You haven't lost any brake fluid.

I just meant that during the bedding in period the brakes are always spongey and a bit poor - they are cock on now though Smile

Sharp braking and smooth again...didnt lose any fluid whilst winding the calipers in i made sure i was careful.

Didnt undo any hoses no Smile

Its sorted my problem, brakes are good again.

Realised i needed drop links though as the previous ones on there where £10 a side and have litterally fallen apart! Cheap and nasty.

Latest ones are from Eurocarparts - Lemforder ones so i hope they will be better!

Anyone know what sort of torque i need to tighten these up to? Have to be gentle with drop links right?

Thread resurrection - this steering wheel wobble has come back and been back for some time....
only seems to be gettin worse.

Does it on steady breaking even at 60mph now....

Does anyone know what can cause the whole steering wheel to wobble and now the dash shakes too under steady brake pedal pressure?

Yes, balanced...no wobbling when on the motorway doing 70+ or whatever. Infact, i can let go of the steering wheel at 75mph and the car goes straight as an arrow, barely any drift atall. So cant be tracking or balancing imo

Only shakes under braking, i can feel it through the pedal and the steering wheel and dash shakes...sometimes violently like!

Im at a loss as to what it could be really, surely if it was driveshafts it would do it all the time not just under braking?

Front discs and pads are new, rear pads are newish....its had new ball joints, new tre's, new droplinks, new springs+dampners, new top mounts, new p bushes all within the last 15K (springs and dampners and topmounts within 30K)

Its had a 2nd hand HDI nearside driveshaft within the last 8K.

Surely it couldnt be that getting f*cked already?

It has to be something do do with the braking system as it only does it under braking.

Whats the symptoms of an ovalled hub?

well when i bought my 6 it had nearly every cause of vibration at the same time.

The wheels balancing was massively out.
Discs warped.
Lower mount gone
Driveshaft on way out.
I cant be sure the driveshaft wasnt a factor as i got a new one when it felt like it was going too come off. But then the brakes were still warped. It may not have been as bad as it was pre new driveshaft though.. Its worth checking all those things. To kick mine off the dash wasnt attcahed properly on the passengers side.
Either way I fixed all of the above and with each item there as a slight improvement. Then finally the wheel balacing and new disc finished the judder for good.
