hi guys, am after some advice and help.

A few weeks ago i noticed that my timing belt had started to shread it self on the out edge, the belt had only done about 30,000miles.so i replaced the timing pinon as this is the only part i never replaced and fitted another new belt. anyway i decided to re check the belt today and it has ever so slightly started to shread, i havent a clue why this is happening so am after some help and ideas?

there is few pictures in my project thread of the old belt.

parts that are new are
waterpump
cambelt kit
timing pinon

Is it shredding on the inner or outer part of the belt as it may be a bit of the timing belt covers that it is catching.

Hi Mike,

I had a look at your project thread, that belt didn't look good.

My first question is, which way was the belt fitted? Because, if it's fitted back to front it can migrate.

Second, did you put extra sealant around the waterpump when fitting it? Because if it is sitting cocked then that too can cause the belt to migrate.

matt gti- the belt was shreadded on the outer part of the belt

bigbadbowen- as far as amaware it thr right tensioner, unless the one i previous had was incorrect.

720puggti- i fitted the timing in the anticlockwise way,and yes i did fit a little bit of extra sealant on water pump. could this be the problem and how the best way to find out.by removing it?

if that belt has only been on a few weeks then its likely to be way too tight!

Hi Mike,

I meant was the belt fitted in the correct direction of of rotation? I.e. if the belt has arrows printed on it, was it fitted so the belt rotated in the direction of the arrows as the engine ran?

If there were no arrows, then you use the printed words (Dayco, Gates, Contitech etc) so that they're facing you as you fit the belt while leaning over the wing. I.e. you should be able to read the words as you fit the belt and they're not upside down.

A sure fire way of knowing whether the belt is too tight is if it has a high pitch whine when the engine is running.

If I were you I would start with a new belt, mounted and tensioned correctly and a clean faced waterpump with only the gasket fitted. While you're there, check the tensioner and roller a running true by spinning them up by hand.

Good luck mate!

the belt didnt have any arrows on it, and the belt ran in the same direction as the engine. i havent got no high pitch sound from the belt,i tension it up using a semiens gauge.

ok i will get another kit and water pump and see what happens, what i dont want to do is replace it all and the same still happing. do you think maybe the cam pulleys maybe knackered.i have got the latest ones fitted

Hello once again Mike,

I don't think you understand what I'm saying. Belts are manufactured to fit on the engine in way only, even though they appear to two ways. It's difficult to describe over the internet like this, especially without pictures as well.

By the way I wouldn't change the whole kit, just the belt; the whole kit is a waste of money, unless the tensioner and roller are broken in some way.

I've never seen knackered cam pulleys, so I doubt it'd be that.

If you're still struggling mate, I suggest you accept Andy's (jord294) offer. The last thing you want is a snapped cambelt.

Make sure there is'nt a sharp edge now on the rear of the crankshaft pulley as the side of the belt has probably been rubbing on that.
