hey guys,

Was just wondering if i would need the 136 or 137 toothed timing belt kit, as both came up on eurocarparts when i typed in my registration. its a 1997 on a p reg. gti 6.

would i be better going straight to peugeot? and is there any kits that are better than others?

cheers

I got mine from a Peugeot dealer selling a cam belt kit on ebay for about 40% less than the RRP. So it is possible to get genuine for a similar price to aftermarket.

Rich W pulleys are only for the crank so you'd still need the full kit as it has tensioners and rolls needed for a cambelt change.

Your car should need the 136 tooth kit as its an early car providing the original engines still fitted as the cambelt was revised on phase 3 cars iirc.

I've always used GSF kits with no issues, also worth changing the waterpump while your there Thumbs up

Whats the deal with phase 3's using a 137 tooth kit? As mine currently has a 136 gates kit on there...?

gafcarparts.com I think their site is, best to call though as the site is a bit poo.

their kits are pretty well priced too, £48.50 last time Igot one, and that was an INA kit with a Dayco belt and INA+SKF tensioners of the revised patters (still a 136 kit)

personal prefference and seeing most engine builders use them I go for the 136 with its manual tensioner.

The manual tensioner being the metal one and not the plastic one with the little pointer to show the correct tension?.

Im guessing its not much different than any other timing belt change? Is there anything specific i need to look out for, its my mate thats doing it but he has not done a xu10j4rs before.

Would i be better getting the kit with the arrow on the tensioner? or is it easy to get the right tension on the manual tensioner.

Sorry for the stupid questions, im a plumber lol but I really regret not becoming a mechanic as its cars ive been interested in all my life , i really want to be able to do alot of the stuff myself to my car and i want to be able to say "i did that". Ive mastered brakes and suspension (still reading up on the torsion bar as im planning on getting a spare and refurbing it myself.

And then one day when my car needs it i want to be able to do a full engine rebuild. just for experience

Hi Darius,

Your mate who's the mechanic should be able to tell when the belt is at it's correct tension if you use the 136 tooth kit.

It's more than likely that this is what's on the engine anyway, a kit from GSF or Euros will do the job nicely.

There's no need to complicate the matter, the question of "which kit" comes up far too often.

If it's a 136 tooth kit on the engine, fit that. If it's 137 tooth fit that. If it's 137 tooth and you want a 136 tooth, buy the stud for the manual tensioner from Peugeot (around £5) and fit the 136 tooth kit.

It's just a matter of getting down to the motor factors and ensuring they have the part; if they don't wait til tomorrow to change the belt.

Another word of advice - fit the better quality pump i.e. the more expensive one, every time.

Oh, and good luck with those future endeavours mate!

Cheers for that.
Ye i will make sure i get the 136 toothed kit as i would imagine that is whats on it.

I just downloaded the manuals from the download section and it makes it sound so simple. So much so that I might even tackle it my self following it step by step and then just get my mate to set the tension.
Hes not a mechanic, he is a farmer lol but has worked on cars since he can remember (he is 21 now), but he knows his stuff, and he is also a really good welder. he will be doing my chassis repair for the top engine mount
he is building a 106 rally car at the moment.(which i have been wet and drying for 5 hours this evening lol

my shopping list for the next 2-3 weeks is

timing belt kit
richw alloy crank pully
chassis repair kit
baker bm grp N engine mount kit

may as well spend the day on it and get it all done at once
