Can't drive it on the old tax disc though, on the spot fine if caught for failing to display although ANPR will show the car as taxed. Up to the OP whether or not he wants to risk it.

If it's insured and mot'd then you can tax it at a post office using the new owner slip bit but that's assuming there is a post office close by and open at the time that you can get to without using the car etc.

Then no, you're doomed. You should pay for the car and get the keys, insure it, then take the V5C to the DVLA the next morning and get it taxed before you drive it.

If you tax it online you can drive it. Print a copy of the receipt and keep it with you in case they try to do you for not displaying the tax disc. You are allowed a degree of leeway when taxing online, same goes for insurance if you've not had a certificate through the post.

Its an offence to not display a valid tax disc not just to not have any tax !

Insure it and keep the paper work and the cash to tax it on you if you get pulled by the fuzz you may be able to talk your way out of it but you could get done

Your risk at the end of the day

That's actually a myth. A Police might be lenient if you have a receipt in the car for buying it online, but it's still illegal to drive a car which isn't displaying a valid tax disc.

Yeah, wouldn't post it up if I was unsure!LOL

From DVLA site:
When you apply for a tax disc online or by using our phone service you are able to legally continue to drive your vehicle for up to 5 days after the tax disc has expired while you wait for the new tax disc to arrive. This will only apply when you have applied for a new tax disc before the current one expires. You should continue to display the expired disc on your vehicle, until the new one arrives

But this rule only applies if there is no gap between the expiry of the old tax disc, and you applying for a new one. If it has been sorned, or has been untaxed for some time, then you can't drive the car without a valid tax disc on display.

And don't drive it without tax and invalidate your insurance, as I'm also sick of paying an extra 50 quid a year to cover the cost of those f*ckers that drive uninsured

No disrespect, but read it carefully.

This will only apply when you have applied for a new tax disc before the current one expires.

As it is mid September, and as the car needs tax, it has none.

It is only valid for people that apply right at the end of the month, and the postman fails to deliver it before the existing one expires.

Edit: Too late, Gman already cleared that one up LOL

Tax is a revenue offence only, it has nothing to do with liability to you or other drivers on the road.

Get it insured (as long as it's roadworthy) and then tax it ASAP, if you're unlucky you'll probably only have to deal with a £60odd fine (assuming it ran out of tax last month).

Alternatively, just pay the guy to tax it at his local PO before you pick it up.
