Make sure you take it for a test drive, apparently a few of them accidentally had some torque, which made them almost a bit interesting to drive but scared Honda owners Thumbs up

Theryre not as reliable as the old b16s, oil pump failure, timing chains snapping, head gasket failures.

Most of these are due to poor maintenance, so a FSH is mandatory.

Chassis wise, tie rods bend easiky, wishbones at front esp the n/s prone to wearing too quick due to poor geometry.

Apart from that just make sure all lights on dash go on and off.

Then bring it to me for some supercharged power courtesy of TTS.

Thumbs up Quite solid cars overall. I'd have one as a runaround if I wanted something a little more social. You'll probably end up keeping it. Especially if you rock out some more induction noise.

Jdm/dc5 gearboxes are a great mod as well.

Mate of mine used to have one of these, not really much quicker than my first 6 and you had to rev the balls out of it to make it go anywhere..... so it was thirsty LOL

He never had any issues with it though, very reliable car as I remember and it was well abused for 3 years.

Don't buy a modified one!

A friends not-so-well-educated friend of a friend bought one and it cost him £1500 in the first 6 weeks, (new clutch, new shocks, other repairs). Not really much advice if you're not a complete mong!

I almost bought one, I was very close to doing so. I just found that the insurance was too high for what they were, every bugger has one and the image they have is not good, you do look and feel like a chav driving one.

(I bought a Celica190 instead so can't really talk)

Been looking at these myself have been driving a 1.4 59 plate grande punto since I sold my gti6. Looking for something with a bit more go and these seem a slight step up from a 6 performance wise and a leap forward reliability wise lol. It needs to be used as a daily for the mrs for the next two years doing 60 odd miles a day don't think I would trust a 6 doing that which is why I sold mine in the first place.

Hmm, I've shoved 23,000 miles on my '6 in the past 18 months and the car hasn't skipped a beat (with a decent service annually). When something eventually does pop, it'll cost a shit lot less to fix than the Honda.

My mate has one and it is very good, and we always argue over our preferred choice of car. I can insure, tax and service mine for less than his insurance premium, and don't look like a chav!

But it is a great hot hatch

lol i got lucky with my last one i think. i owned it for 3 years and it only broke on me twice once being a clutch cable and the other being a bad earth. just would feel a lot happier knowing she was in something a bit newer commuting to uni and back. modern cars are of no real interest to me at the moment anyway I've got a mk3 escort, a scirocco gt and a classic 1200 beetle to bum around in. its just going to be a daily hack thats a bit more fun! insurance comes out very cheap for me on a type R although i havnt had a recent quote for a gti6.
