well as most of you will know that i recently dropped a screw from the stepper motor into the flywheel/clutch/department and have decided to take the car off the road to change the gearbox(it was crunching in 4th anyway!) and retrieve that screw!!

currently installed is the BE1 gear box from the 205 gti 1.6 where the reverse gear is next to the 1st gear, ive heard to run a later gear box such as the BE3 from the 1.9 i would need to modify something on the car as reverse gear is under 5th gear

thing is it a big job to convert the car over to take the BE3 gearbox? surely if the car is converted over to BE3 spec it should take the xsara vts box without any real issues? also the gti6 has 6 gears, so im guessing that is more work required than the xsara box?

help please, im a bit of a noob!

should be able to change to BE3 by running all the BE3 gearstick, linkages etc. i can't remember off hand if the subframe is the same though.

i run a 1900 box on my car, which i really like the ratios on but that could be due to having a fair bit more power than a standard engine. theres a few which say that the 1.9 box is too long for a standard engine and the mi16/xsara vts box is a better match.

Provided you can live without full lock the gti 6 speed box is the best box i have looked into this and was going to make a hybrid box with the best ratios from all the boxes but even then takeing into account the time and money needed to do this the gti 6 box is the most cost effective option you can pick one up on here from £60

1st gear WAY too short and won't get to 60mph in 2nd gear.

Motorway miles WILL leave you deaf as it sits on the point where it comes on cam 3-3.5k revs

I find the ratios on the Xsara box are much more suited than the 1.6 gti box. It's fun for about a week with the 1.6 box on

I would definitely recommend the VTS box for this. my 309 has an engine and box from a VTS and it's far more sensible than my 205 Mi16 was with the 1.6 box. That said it is less fun, I never got bored on long journeys in the 205 even without any sound deadening or stereo and with every one of the 4000rpm's going through my spine at 70mph courtesy of the BBM mounts. I loved it, but I wouldn't recommend it.

If you do run the VTS box you'll have to change the clutch mechanism from the push to a pull type, which is dead easy to do, and change one of the gear selector arms to that off a BE3 box, again dad easy to do. If you go down this route PM me nearer the time and I'll talk you through it if you want.

I have bought a 1.6 box to put in mine, but the more I hear the negatives on the 1.6 box, the more I have second thoughts.

i personally think the 1.6 isnt bad, but slightly longer gear ratios wouldnt be nice

I've got the xsara box and it's great. I wish I had tried a Xsara or 1.6 box on my bodied Mi.

My thoughts were, its not an everyday car, I want it to be fun and nippy low down. If I want to go any distance, I wouldn't take a 205 anyway!
