A few years ago someone posted up a link to some stuff that you put on the friction part of your pads to stop squeal.

Can anyone remember what it was?

Does anyone know if that stuff works? The blurb says it targets air pockets in the friction material,I thought the squeal was resonance from the disc?

Pads are always slightly porous, even after pyrolysis, I'd guess it just sets up as a resin in the pores and makes the pad structure slightly stiffer with more internal damping.
Absorbs a little of the resonance but more importantly problem shifts the frequency it occurs at.

to reduce/eliminate squeal bevel the front and rear edges of the brake pads without touching the inner or outer edges. Add some copper slip behind the pads. Clean up the face plate with a little copper slip around the hub to seat the disc.

Could a slightly worn wheel bearing make brakes? squeal?

Tried that all on my Brembos, didn't make a blind bit of difference.

When I am not getting bent over by my exams I'll try and source some of this.

I have temporarily quietened my brakes using:

This

These

I also removed the rust and ground the lip off the discs and filed a tiny chamfer on the leading and trailing edges of the pads.

Let's see how long they stay quiet for.

I had chronic brake squeal on the 206 GTi 180 brakes a I fitted to my 306 XS for a bit, and we've had the same trouble on the uni Formula Renault we're running. Both times it was a manufacturing defect in the pad where they contact the sliders. On the Renault there's a U pin that goes through the calliper and holds the pads in place. There were burrs in the edges of the holes this pin goes through. On the 306 the shoulders of the pads where they slide were burred as well. It's always worth taking your time and making an effort to clear any dirt/debris/rust away from the sliders, make sure they're as smooth and flat as possible then put a thin smear of copper grease on them only where the pads are actually in contact with them (otherwise they collect dirt and dust and the grease just makes things worse) before the pads go in.
