Has anyone used aluminium chequer plate in their footwells?

Did Snetterton yesterday, and the inside of the car gets extremely hot, and most of this is coming from the driver's footwell where (now all the deadening has been removed) is really does get extremely hot.

Not only that, I still have a few Paul Walker-style manifold breaches in the floor where the tar crap has been removed and the plastic plugs have gone missing.

I reckon best bet is to get some aluminium chequer plate stuff that I can shape to where I need it - it'll help keep out the heat, plug the holes and provide some grip. So, two questions:

1) There are various thicknesses, thinnest seems to be 1.5mm. Does anyone know if that's thin enough to bend to shape? Obviously want it to be as light as possible as well.

2) Does anyone know of someone who does it cheap other than eBay? It's the kind of thing I can imagine is marked up considerably and can probably be found at some tiny company in some nowhere industrial estate for no money

Cheers in advance people.

You'll be able to bend that fine, you can always run an angle grinder down through behind where you are bending to make it easier.

I would try at a local fabrication place, they would probaly have a few offcuts lying around that would do the job

Yes

It will be a pain in the arse to bend into shape imo

Also how will you secure it?

bond it down or get some steel sheeting like i intended and you could spot weld it down. or rivet it!

I was planning on rivetting it, simplest way I can think of and makes for easy removal.

As for neatness I'm not that fussed, as long as it's about right and provides some protection I'm not all that fussed.

Trouble with rivets would be corrosion from the underneath? Rivet then seal underside?

Tigerseal would work, if it doesn't show I've previously just slapped some hammerite around the hole too which seems to work.

I saw those and they're an option, but was hoping for something less than forty quid. Seems a lot to me...

I know you would rather buy the sheet and make it, but if it stays at £25, will probably be worth it Yes

Better off bonding it down, or at least a bead of adhesive and then rivet it down, otherwise you'll probably find the rivets come loose as it settles in from the bends/heat/vibration.
Then it'll do your tit's in 'cause it'll rattle.

You'd be better off with thinner stainless steel rather than thick ally plate.

True dat, just didn't want anything too permanent. I'll figure something out.

Why so? I'm happy to go for that if there's something suitable, just want something that provides some grip too if possible. Open to suggestions Smile

Harder wearing, easier to bond in, being thinner it should be easier to bend, and it has a lot less heat transfer than ally Thumbs up

Can't argue with that kind of logic! Any thoughts on where to get it or what kind of thickness I'd need?

Have you thought of just getting some better heat reflective material in the exhaust tunnel? I found most of my heat came from the tunnel anyway so sheeting in the footwells is'nt going to help that much. A load of exhaust wrap and a good polish up of the existing heatshields would be much more effective. If you need a little extra grip, use skateboard grip tape cut in strips in the footwells, great on slippy drilled metal pedals too incidentally.
