Just stopped to put some petrol in the car had been driving about an hour when a light brown liquid started flowing from the front drivers side of the car. Sorry for my ignorance but does anyone know what this is? |

I'm looking after the boy while my better half is at the shop's otherwise I'd go out and check but it looks like it had stopped when I got it back to the house, it was probably about a 500ml bottle worth maybe a little more, I thought coolant was red? This stuff was a very light brown colour |

Sounds old and in need of replacement whatever it is. Old rusty coolant sounds likely. Did you do the fingertip dip and sniff (!) test? Is it water or oil-based?As above check all fluid levels. ________________________________________ Cherry Rallye SOLD |

Just had a chance to look at it just now but it is getting dark out but it looks like it was the coolant that has emptied, any usual suspects for this? Any well known reasons? Big job's to put right? Sorry about all the questions guys but I'm very new to this car, and it already doesn't look like the love affair is going to last |

Have a proper look in the daylight, top the water up at the very least. If a hose has gone then it will leak out either there and then or immediately upon moving. You may need to bleed your system too if it has emptied out |

Pretty simple to bleed. Have a search on the forum, if no luck get a haynes manual, you will be sure to use it again |

If it is coolant, it will be old hoses or radiator simply needing replacement - they don't last for ever. Not a big job at all - well within the ability of a moderately knowledgeable enthusiast. notoriouslor wrote: Sorry about all the questions guys but I'm very new to this car, and it already doesn't look like the love affair is going to last Old cars need stuff doing on them as parts wear out. It is as simple as that. Cars cost money - what you save on what depreciation would cost on a new car you make up for to some extent on an old car in increased maintenance. Right then:1. Rad cap seal failing 2. Airlock in the system due to leak - gets hot and forces coolant out the drain pipe. Heater matrix may have gone too. 3. Head gasket failure 4. Heat exchanger failure 5. Does it have any antifreeze in it? Sounds like it possibly didn't. I'd put my money on numbers 5 and 2. ________________________________________ Nothing to see here |

I really hope it's not the heater matrix, is this not a massive job to put right? I've still not had a chance to look at it, hopefully granny will watch the boy tomorrow and I'll get a chance, although I put some water in it right after work and it never p*ssed straight out. I've also bought a haynes today so I'll be reading through that but as you've all probably guessed I'm not exactly a mechanic |
