Hi, I'm really struggling with engine mount troubles here and hoping someone can advise please.

My off side main engine mount was repaired last year by welding a new plate in where it had snapped. A
New captive nut was welded onto the plate and the mount screwed back in.

However, recently, the mount has worked loose and the nut has snapped off from the plate, meaning the engine mount will neither loosen or tighten. The strength of the weld means I cannot chisel it out and gas axe isn't an option due to all the hoses in that area. The nut seems to be inside the chassis leg and so is inaccessible.

Is there any advice you guys can offer to help me with this frustrating situation?

Any help would be hugely appreciated

When this happens to me I wedge up under the mount to pull the captive nut hard agaist the underside of the plate, the spot welds on the corners usualy bite into the metal and stop it rotating. Another easy way is to undo the nut on the bracket a turn, then jack up the engine (with something to spread the load so you don't puncture the sump) this will apply upwards pressure to the nut under the plate and hopefully you can then chisel the mount around a little at a time to get the thing off.

Space to get a pair of long nosed mole-grips onto the nut is hard to find, especially if you have A/C pipes in the way. It can take the best part of an hour to shift stubborn ones but keep at it and splurge plenty of penetrating oil into the cup, some should find it's way into the threads and help you get the bas**rd out. Wink

Thanks for the advice dave,

I've been trying for over an hour but the nut is just turning with the mount and it seems it will not catch on anything. Is it only a/c pipes running through the chassis leg? As the way it's going the gas axe may be the only option left to get the modified plate out due to the strength of the welds?

I'd just put a thin hacksaw through the mount, let the nut and bolt drop off and drill and weld a new one in...means you'll need a new mount though.

I'd do that as well !

Then weld the plate + nut up properly this time to stop it happening again Smile

Hi guys, thanks for all the help.

I ended up breaking the top threaded part and rubber block off the mount. After another hour (and a half :-() I decided to try with the gas axe.

The welds did give way in the end and luckily a friend of mine had a spare mount so I'm back on the road now.

As a sidenote, the car drives so much better now. Won't be rushing to fix anybody's engine mounts in a hurry though after that
