fiited new belt the day, twice infact, pinned the head and pinned the crank pulley, remove pins when belts been fitted, it locks up when i try to rotate eng, am i correct to think that the crank pulleys can slip on these, so the result would be timing incorect ?________________________________________ denwar |

i didnt start the car guys, it turned out it was just the bottomk pulley that had slipped, i just robbed one from another gti6 in the garage, fired the 3 pins into her adjusted the verniers and nipped up the belt, runs quiete as a mouse, gave it new water pump at same time, new drive belt and a brand new auto tensioner, runnung very well considering its rolling onto 150k, and i only paid 500 for the car , short mot and tax though. ________________________________________ denwar |

I don't understand why people get into such a fuss over the timing of the engine. As long as the engine was running properly prior to changing the belt, pinning the cams into place is all that's really required, as the crank is timed as long as the cams are. You then whip off the crank pulley mark the crank against the block with some tipex and remove the belt. Replace the belt and gubbins and turn it over with the pulley on, remove pulley again make sure cams are pinned and the tip ex mark should line up. But those are just my thoughts... I guess people feel confident with an aligned pulley. BTW Denwar, the first time I rebuilt my engine it only began tapping after a while. If yours doesn't tap I'd consider you extremely lucky as it doesn't take a lot to bend these valves; even a fraction. I hope what happened to me doens't happen to you... ________________________________________ Deepak Gohil |

Totally agree, although I guess if you don't do it very often people would be more comfortable with the correct alignment of the pulley. ________________________________________ "Supercharged - 454.1bhp/317.5lb/ft"Peugeot 306 GTi-6 2000 (X), Moonstone |

Tbh I prefer to use the timing pins and lock the cams together with the special tool when loosening and tightening the cam pulley bolts, it is the right way after all,There is nothing wrong with doing it the way suggested on here if you are competent enough I suppose although if not it is the cause of many tapping engines I fear, The Autodata Faq on here is the best guide I think, also I don't like the method of lining the woodruff key with the 9 o' clock bolt (although it is a good visual check to make sure you are in the ballpark) as I think it's not accurate enough, I have seen a cambelt done this way and then checked with the timing pins and the cam pins did not go in (but were very close), Just my opinion of course and others may say near enough is good enough but I prefer to be 100% spot on ________________________________________ Team Supercharged Gti-6™ |
