Well I always knew it was going to happen, as the water has been pressuring up for a good few years now, but more recently its got serious and I know one of the cyliners is filling with water when its left.

So its not been touch recently but Im planning to get it sorted over the next month or so and wanted any pointers from those who have already done it? Anything I should look out for? easier to do a certain way? Manifold on or off for removing the head?

All the usual stuff really. Im not in a rush to get it sorted but it would be nice to get it back on the road and on a few trackdays for the better weather.

manifold isn't the hard to get off, makes removing the head a bit easier i think. i just dropped the cat off and loosened the manifold off leaving it resting in the exhaust tunnel. then just stripped everything off and whipped head off. nothing really overly complicated about it if you have a good arsenal of tools and follow torque/sequence procedure

get it checked though and skimmed etc if needbe, been there done that and skimped / regretted it big time

of everything i've ever done i thought the most annoying bit was getting the timing belt cover off Laugh

yeah, my knuckles know the issues with the timing belt cover haha.

I'll be sending the head off to get tested and skimmed, I dont plan to be doing it again.

I'm trying to get some space at my brothers work on a ramp over a few weekends but its looking like I'll be stuck doing it outside the house Sad

tbh having done one in the car, and removed several engines in one piece with the gearbox I'd do the latter, small tasks like removing the exhaust manifold that take a few minutes out of the engine bay can take hours in the car.

timing belt can be done very quickly too.

It is easily possible if you drop the top mount off and lower the engine. I'm sure Carl has said in the past he takes them off though.

I doubt it's that bad on a ramp but without one I wouldnt even try it, as Welshpug I'd rather drop the engine out.

Rachet spanner on the exhaust studs and if you start attacking them after running the engine up, the bolts are All easier to undue.

I would never take the engine out to do a cylinder head, they deffenately aren't that bad to do.

Carl

Agreed, I can get a head off in situ in about an hour and a quarter, they are fairly easy once you have done a few. Yes

Stan.

Completely agree with this, get a set of flex ratchet spanners and you'll have the Mani clear of the head in ten mins ish, I did mine last summer having spoke to carl first and trust

I've got the ratchet spanners so think this will be the way I'll go then. Will be much easier for me to do it that way.

I just need to keep an eye out for some mild/dry weekends now haha.

Looks like my brothers place has a ramp free this weekend so hoping to get the head off on saturday.

Whats the best gasket to go with, standard pug or is Rich's uprated one worth the money?
