evening all

ok, for some time now my 2nd gear syncro has become weak so i have adapted my driving style for the change from 1st to 2nd.

since doing this it has been fine with the occasional small crunch when i have changed at too higher revs.

so yesterday me and a new aquired friend carried out a clutch change. f*ck me was the old clutch fudged!! which i believe to be the original one, anyway the clutch is in and WOW its so smooth Smile

basically what i did i believe was slightly lazy and maybe stupid of me!! i drained the gear oil out and used it again once the new clutch was in and now the 2nd gear syncro seems a hundred times worse.

however i believe the reasoning behind the 2nd gear syncro now being worse is due to me using wynns gear treatment which basically thickens up the oil!

one tube treats 2 litres but i have put 2 tubes in! OOPS Dry so would i be right in thinking that now the gear oil is much too thick thus for hindering the syncro further?

thanks in advance

Matt

Anyone who's ever had anything but clean, pure, standard Pug gearbox oil has had problems.

Empty it out and fill it with normal Pug stuff, will only make it better Yes

not for the BE and MA boxes, its the ML that used 75w90.

they specify, not recommend Wink

Thickened oil with friction modifiers (which is exactly what your additive has just done), is just about the worse thing for a synchro anyway.

Especially ones as fussy as the Pug ones.

75w is quite a wide band for rating, so you'll find that most 75w90's are actually a lot thicker than 75w80's both hot and cold.
The difference between them can easily be 50% both hot and cold, it could be twice as thick when warm depending on the brands.

How come you didn't change the box when it was off?

As said above at the beginning of this thread pure laziness mate.

The synchro was damaged before I used the treatment. and that was due to my gear selector popping off as I was going into 2nd gear and ever since then if you take it past 6 k and throw it into 2nd quickly you get a small crunch!

I have a quote to replace 1st and 2nd gear mesh which is £140 + vat I think that's a fair price??? Plus you get warranty with it. The reason fir 1st gear mesh being done aswell is due to 1st and 2nd sharing the same hub so best to replace both.

I use the word hub loosely as I can't quite remember how the refurb company explained to me Wink

I could get a 2nd hand box but you never know what condition its in until it's been put in!

Its usually 3rd that gets mashed though and £140 would get you at least 2x second hand boxes and oil.

As the box has been off i'd keep an eye on the shaft oil seals too. They should be ok, but sometimes don't like being disturbed.

They are different problems though. The issue with third gear is the teeth on the gearset shearing.

The first to second crunch is a selection / synchroniser hub issue. It could be a worn hub but I'm sure Miles has said before that it's usually caused by a worn selector spring.

I'm unsure what the refurb place means when they talk about replacing the mesh though, as there aren't any meshes. Unless they mean the gearsets but there'd be no reason to replace those.

£140 + VAT sounds too cheap for replacing the hub too, unless it's a second hand hub, as it's ~£160 from Peugeot for the part.

i have heard this to rich and it makes sense to me.

as for the refurb company they said it would be a hub change which contains both 1st and 2nd gear?

the compnany is called ATE is it worth having the work done there or do you think i would benfit more for slinging another 2nd hand box in?

many thanks Smile

The hub does not contain 1&2 only the Synrco rings, the gears are seperate,
Normally as Rich has said a spring clip on the hub snaps, Handy like me if you have loads spare or it's a new hub. so the differance between 50p and 150 ish.

ok just bare with me as i kno very little about the inner workings of a gearbox Whistle

so as you have so many i could purchase one from you?

do i tell this refurb company that they only need replace this spring you speak of?

will the crunching of 2nd gear have damaged anything else at all?

many thanks matt
