Right, so i've cleaned up the dodgy earths in and around the engine bay and charged the battery, all was well I hoped.

Now when it does start, it splutters and dies rather than revs. Had a poke around under the bonnet and it would appear the injector on number 1 cyclinder is leaking badly, stinks of petrol and it's stripped the nice shiny paint off the manifold.

If the leak's really bad, could this cause the fuel pressure to drop so much that the car won't run? When I had it fired up it spluttered like it was on just a couple of cylinders...

Thanks in advance

Yes it would kill the fuel pressure. Might be worth changing the injectors and fuel pressure regulator over to some other and see if it cures it.

Could be the regulator has gone up the spout and the injector can't handle the extra pressure.

true. I remember when i painted the rail one of the seals looked suspect, threw on some sealant to lend a hand but that might have given up the ghost with the -15 at night here...

Crap, i still can't figure this out.

Replaced all the injector seals and fuel filter, took the fuel feed pipe off and cranked the engine and it provides a nice steady flow of fuel. The seals mean the rail now holds pressure and i'd hoped that would solve the issues i'm having. But it didn't.

So as it stands.. I have spark. I have fuel. The belt is lined up correctly and not slipped, so I have compression. The engine turns over on the starter and occasionally it fires, but more like a cough than starting up. But the fact it splutters means it's not an immobiliser issue, if that was f*cked it would stop the engine from even trying to start up. It should start...

...so why doesn't it? Hmm

Correct, decatted.

I just don't understand why it would be blocked now? It was running, changed the starter over, it fired up ok, turned it off and now it won't start again Huh?

Didn't change the crank sensor as Mei said I wouldn't get a spark if it was faulty. Although i'm wondering if it's causing an intermittent spark, making it splutter then die off again...

hmm, ive just had a scan through the other thread, blocked fuel filter when the tank was very low and pulled some crap through?

although on an old mi16 engine where the crank sensor was dodgy although it would still start, (so had a spark could of been weak though) it wouldnt rev up and run very bad.

Fuel filter's been replaced, and i've had the feed pipe off to check for flow so i know fuelling's ok.

I'll try crank sensor and see what happens

You see that brown plug, follow the wire back and it will take you to the crank sensor.

Two m6 bolts (10mm head).
It is a bit of a cnut to get to but not impossible.

There is a bit about testing the sensor in the FAQ somewhere. Easy test if you have an AVO meter.

Balls, it'll be in a similar area to the earth then, and that was a ballache to get to.

It's going on diags tomorrow so we'll see if there's any error codes flying about, might give a clue.
