Hi guys, I have just got my hands on a 1998 gti6 Ph2. But it has an electrical problem, there doesnt seem to be a spark and it wont run. I have checked a few threads on here and I have done the following:

Fuel pump, is priming and pumping fuel through.

Earth, is working fine checked this from the spark rocker gasket to the battery with a multimeter and is earthing fine.

I have had a plug out to look for a spark touching it to earth and got nothing.

Took apart the key checked the transponder still in place and looks ok, I dont know how to check this other than that?

I took out the multi functional relay (behind the ECU) cleaned this and checked all connection and refitted (is there any other way I can check this) .

Is there anything else I can do before I look into a diagnostic guy out?

Also one more thing does anyone have any kind of diagnostic kit thats would be worth getting hold of. I have had a look at a few other threads and it seems you can get a OBD cable and download some software?

The car is in Nantwich is anyone is local with diagnostic kit (worth a shot, Wink)?

Thanks in advance, Andy

My bet will be the crank sensor.

If the fuel pump is priming, then the immobiliser and main relay are working as they should.

Not sure re the diagnostics. I looked into it many years ago and all that was available then was the really expensive stuff. I know the cheapy Gunson's kits don't work with OBD-II, but there may be something available these days?

Since the crank sensor is such an easy swap, I'd suggest you try and swap one with another local member before going too much further investing money.

Thanks khj i'll look into that, could there be anything else stopping the plugs sparking?

Is there anyone in the nantwich area willing to swap a crank sensor to see if that will work?

Crank sensor it was the crank sensor, the damaged one had a big chunk missing from the end which is a bit worrying but it all works for now.
