Hey Smile

I'm refurbishment the alloy wheels I bought from lotek and need a bit of help.

I will be doing them one at a time, no rush.

I have the tyre off the one and have sanded basically all of it with 120 grit sandpaper, look ok so far.

DO i need to give it a quick once over with paint thinner at the next stage before i put the filler in and sand it?

Obviously if i need to put the paint thinner on then i will wash that off with soapy water, leave to dry and then prime it up.

Any help would be appreciated Smile

Nick

Were they corroded - trying to work out the need for the 120.

Other than that no straight in with the filler, Only really need to degrease it before you put any paint on them. Unless obviously they are full of grease.

i used the 120 on the one to test it, it has got quite a bit of kerbing out though.

so now i just use the filler / sand down with 800 wet and dry / clean with soapy wter and prime etc

i dont need any paint thinner on it?

the reason i ask is because when i come to do the rest how will i get the old paint off

cool Smile

Im going to wash it all with paint thinner tomorrow and then clean in soapy water before i put any primer on it.

I am actually going with white primer with a metalic siver.

Should look pretty good if i can get the paint right as its going to be tricky.

Here are the alloys incase you havent seen them:

Carefull using soapy water before you primer it as depending on what soap you use it could well cause a reaction.

You are best wiping over with thinners before you apply any paint but no real need throughout the prep.

I did mine recently, be *very* careful to leave more than enough time for each layer of primer/paint to dry, especially at this time of year. I did mine in the summer when I could leave them outside in the sun for a couple of days between coats, that's not really possible this time of year unless you fancy fuming yourself to death inside the house Smile

If you rush them, the paint won't be as hard as it should be, and it'll be a disaster and just scratch/flake off as soon as you try and fit them. It's a very satisfying job when it's been done well, but it doesn't 'arf take patience.

As Owain said, not the best time of year to be doing them so just take it slow and leave enough time between coats otherwise there will be a reaction and it will not be pretty.

I did my cyclones a couple of years back which you can find here...

Refurb thread

Don't use any soapy water, just use thinners between the sanding stages.
Don't use anything between the spraying stages.

Especially give the paint time to dry properly before the lacquer goes on. If you don't, the paint WILL react and it will sort of cave in on itself!

I just put my cyclones back on the car a few weeks ago for the winter and they are still in good shape.
Only place that has lost a bit of paint is inside the bolt holes but that is to be expected really.

Just take it slow and you will get good results Smile

Quick update: Superman

I have now sanded down one of the wheels (apart from the centre piece and inside, heres how it looks..

i have used 120 sandpaper all over and just cleaned it up with some white spirit (stinks lol)!

I have a little more sanding to do (maybe an hour or so) and then i will put the filler in and sand that with 800 grit wet and dry.

Below is the worst part of the wheel, should be able to sort this out with the two part filler i have coming Razz

And finally below is the whole alloy sanded, i realise i need to do some more sanding and cleaning before the white primer goes on but here it is so far Smile

Will keep you all updated Smile

They're just stuck on with sticky pads, just peel them off them get rid of the sticky stuff with white spirit.

Almost certainly the refurb will change the balance (as will new tyres) so if you don't they'll be peeled off when you get the tyres put on, leaving a bit unpainted patch underneath.

You should cut the valves off as well because they will be replaced when you get the tyres fitted Smile

I Will be cutting the valves off and will also take the weights off Smile Cheers guys Smile

Just a quick update...

I have put the two part filler (which i read was best (Q-bond)) all around the edge as it all needed doing.

I have also filled parts of the central spokes and sanded these down.

I am in no particular rush to get things done so i will be doing it all properly, i filled and sanded some of the edge before i filled ALL of it and it seems so much better. Also filled in the major bump.

Let me know what you guys think Smile

I think you're definitely doing the right thing by taking your time, I've always rushed my refurbs and it shows once they're done. If you're planning on taking your time anyway it's not a problem if you find a little bit you've forgotten to fill; you can just re-fill it when you're doing one of the others.

Keep up the good work Smile

Dont put thinners anywhere near it, and if you have used the filler no water either as the filler should never be gotten wet.
Go to your local paint supplier and get some prepaint or if u go to halfords they sell the prepaint cloths (they are like baby wipes) and clean it all down before u start and between each coat.

What grade papers are you working through, mate?

180, then 400, then 800/1000 will do the trick.

Also, you'll be there all day sanding your filler with 800. Go staright in with some 180 and work your way up. Thumbs up

Actually, the advice I gave earlier was based on using water based paints, you have to be more thorough as paper marks show through the paint more. If, using water based, you were to go from 120 straight to 800 you would have horrible paper marks. Having said that I've never painted from cans. LOL
