Ok so it's been a while. Had some spare time this week so thought i'd crack on with a few jobs. Main aim of the time before I return to SA was to make sure that it runs, seeing as it was a bit of a parts bin coming together and the donor car had a few pains. So, first job was wiring extension.

Order up one box of tricks, one electrician friend, some cups of tea and one cold wind. ¬_¬

Job almost done:

Very tidy work by by friend Tom.

With the wiring complete the next step was coolant and the rad, so in she goes

Nissens rad and two spal fans, although i didn't get a chance to wire the fans in - she'll have to wait.

Had to take the PTFE gasket off as it was making the inlet manifold foul the supercharger, so bought a genuine Peugeot gasket, and re-painted the inlet manifold since it had hemorrhaged the paint where the rail dumped some petrol on it. Wire brushed, etch primed, painted and petrol-resistant lacquered this time. Looks nice.

From there I just went a bit gung-ho and pipes up the intercooler supported on my toolbox just to see if it runs. Cranked it for a bit and then hooked up the injectors and she coughed into life. During cranking though, my clocks moved round on the dials and decided they'd had enough, staying where they were - plus the mileage display is gone - anyone had this before? I presume they're dead but would rather make sure.

WTF?

Anyway, runs just a little lumpy but the engine has been stood over a year and the car almost a year now. Think the alternator belt is past it's best as something in the vicinity started squealing. Might have to dose it with WD40. At least I know it all works and can go on and buy the remaining parts I need like a charger fluid change, where I will move the cooler too to behind the drivers fog recess. I will then change the engine oil, add the spacer plate and fit a 19 row oil cooler behind the passenger fog recess.

So in all, it runs, which is where i wanted to be before I return to South Africa for a third stint. It's not likely to be ready to run before summer, but that's what pays the pennies after all - i've got a 600MW jigsaw puzzle to oversee for Eskom. Off to quickly was the moss off it now..

Good work Si, bet it feels good to make some progress Smile

As for the dials, pretty sure this is down to a battery/ bad earth issue Yes

I had this on my diesel when it decided not to start, and also yesterday it did it when I took my 6 out. f*cking thing! Laugh

Hmmn, maybe it was because i'd cranked a few times. Battery is on charge atm so will check it later on. Perhaps it is a poor earth, i don't recall disturbing any when i had the front end off but could be mistaken. Mileage panel lights up and that just no numbers. Strange that they've not gone to max on the gauges but i did see them do a dance.

It does feel good to make some progress Chris, it's only a service and finding the oil coolers/intercooler a home now and it's properly mobile. The nice to haves can wait like the rear beam.

As for the jetwash i got half a field out of it, mostly from the rear window, heh.

Edit: re reading my thread I noticed I've had two earths off when cleaning the bay. Going to have them off and see what's what. Give them a scrub with a wire brush.

Pleased with progress really given that I spent 37 weeks overseas last year which was unplanned.

Thanks guys. I just find it odd they parked short of max. I'll investigate the two earths I discovered I'd disturbed and take it from there, the battery even when fully charged didn't help it.

Would really love to finish it as the end is in sight. Done an awful lot of it single handed. Will be onto it like a fat man on a burger when I get back.

Didn't get it finished before coming away again. I know it runs which is where i wanted to get to.

Permanent home for the intercooler and need to fit the oil coolers in the right places. Then i need to choose a brake setup of some description for the mass of parts in the garage.

I'm thoroughly missing this at the moment, very eager to get it finished, but it's not likely to see the road til next year. Sad

Hi Chris,

Yep i'm still in SA. Not sure when i'm home, thread won't see any updates for a while. Tired of the pace of this job!!

Yours has come on leaps and bounds since i came away. I need to add a couple of bars to my cage but it can all wait til she's up and running properly. Still got my xsara beam to fit, the brake setup, oil cooler, and a host of other parts like the oil and boost gauges and so on.

Serious underestimation. Laugh

At this rate Chris you shall be gainfully employed on my return to the UK lol. Got a bit to go yet but you've no idea how much i'm itching to finish this car! Missing it as much as Trevor I reckon!

Reading Owain's thread has made me jealous. Sad

Shush you, not done anything of interest to it yet! Have been maintaining the HDi with new bits.

I've cleaned about a kilo of ming out of the door shuts and swapped out the broken rear light cluster, that's all thus far.

I have the stupid issue with my clocks, can't work out what's going on with them. I get no life from the speedo, tacho, oil gauge and fuel gauge. Oil gauge could be a red herring as i can't remember if it worked anyway, seem to remember it always flashing its tits off at me, but the rest were all working before the engine swap (got a photo with the car running after changing to P3 needles).

Have checked all my earths and managed to get the warning lamps funcitoning but still zip from the speedo, tacho, fuel. Coolant temp moves but not uch as the engine is obv cold.

Remove and re insert the shunt fuse.

Hi Carl. Have tried that to no avail. When I first got it running the Speedo and Tacho Span round and stayed there. Had no life since and hasn't touched the during the change. Ecu is obviously different but other than that I can't think what's changed. Sad

I've fixed the smegging clocks at last! After all that it was a blown fuse that you couldn't see, just failed continuity! At last!

So I am here...

Except I bothered to put all the wipers and that back in. All I have to do now is fit the oil cooler, relocate the supercharger oil cooler and mount the intercooler! oh, and check the suspension/fit the droplinks.

Gotta go back to SA though!

I'm going back on Wednesday, the customer has requested my presence on site as we are justabout ready to run up.

Should be back in Dec, so a fairly short stint, then straight back onto the Rallye. Very much got the love for it back last night! Even better now it's in the garage as Trevor is away.

Just a little update for this everning. Had the drivers wheel off to attach the droplink and check I torqued everything up, then went at the intercooler.

I've not carpeted my driveway, she's tucked up in the garage as Trevor is on holiday.

Intercooler is mounted properly, the pipes are just resting in position. I need to relocate the supercharger reservoir on the right hand pipe run as when i roughly positioned it, it's fouling both the rad switch and the boost pipe. Gonna stop off for some hose tomorrow on the way home if i can. Left hand side pipe is an extremely tight pipe run - think it's slightly too long axially but i'll get to the bottom of it.

Slam panel looks a bit skanky but it's a spare that I was scrapping which I can drill lots of holes in til i'm happy with the oil cooler locations/bracketry. Forgot to order the lines for my oil cooler/sandwich plate though so piping it up will certainly have to wait.

Going to have to do a cambelt change to be safe, doubting myself for some reason on that one. Not sure quite why the cam pullies need to be rotated to set the belt tension.
