Is the shift from 1st to second usually harsh. I just bought this car and was wondering if I should be worried?

1st and 2nd is stiff and slow when cold but quickly becomes more fluid when warm.

Also when lifting the clutch in 1st and 2nd whilst changing gears can be slightly jolty when cold and again is more fluid and unoticeable when warm....

Make sure you are using the right gearbox oil.
It could also be the lower engine mount wearing out making the change harder to make smoothly.

my 2nd crunched horribly. i never did a high rev shift. Just yesterday I changed the oil and whilst the change is notchy, it's a lot smoother. My clutch is really smooth now as well

if your crunching 1st to 2nd at high revs your synchro mesh is knackerd. Usually a tail tail sign the cars been ragged

I was a little worried about this when I first picked up my car but after a lot of early morning starts and 30mins+ journeys I soon realised that the moment the oil gets moving and warm it becomes slicker and easier to change gear - part of the 306's charm I guess! Roll eyes

Unless it is very grinding then I am sure it is nothing to worry about! Smile

I know the syncro's are probably goosed and I'm on a hunt for a decent 2nd hand box.
I think you'll be hard pushed to find a 6 that hasn't been ragged
