Hi,

I think there may be a leak and if so where are the most obvious places?

Whilst looking under the car this weekend I noticed a small amount of fresh oil coming from the back of the engine bay (where the drive shaft enters the gearbox). However the car recently had some work on the driveshaft and therefore some oil did end up resting in the drip tray / engine cover and this is maybe what I can see, re the oil. What I am going to do is take this off, clean the area and check for any leaks, BUT where are the obvious places to check and are any of these problems terminal?

Also, is it normal to have a super strength black plastic bag covering the length of the drive shaft? It looks like it is supposed to be there and it hasn't just been chewed up from the road. (It extends from the gearbox to the first Rubber drive shaft seal) If you look into the gap behind the battery / engine I can reach down, see and feel the drive shaft and on that seems to be a very strong plastic bag.

Thank you in advance for your help with this.

Kind regards,

Joe

If it's not what they left behind. When you have work done on the driveshaft ie take it out you should replace the driveshaft oil seal. These tend to need changing everytime it's taken out. Only cost a couple of quid, try and find out if the garage changed them. As for the 'bag' each shaft has cv boots to protect the bearing parts but if I saw one I wouldn't call it a plastic bag, so maybe someone has bodged it. I have a picture of the one I replaced, does it look like this?

Thank you for your reply ballardpaul. The main reason I ask is because when I went to look at the car before puchasing I noticed that there seemed to be a fair bit of fresh, what looked like gearbox oil resting in the plastic sump cover. When driving the oil would then end up on the Cat and smell like, you guessed it burning / hot gearbox oil. I question the seller and he advised me that the drive shafts had been taken out and that the seals had NOT been replaced. I was due to pic the car up the weekend after so in that time he replaced the seals, and rubber bits. Now it doesn't seem to have much, if any oil there but I haven't had much time to look as I have been working like a man posessed. Although I will be checking all this weekend. As for the 'plastic bag' it still remains but it doesn't seem to get in the way and if anything it looks and feels as if it is supposed to be there . . .
