How does this work, always see people talk about making and using a header tank when bleeding the system.

Can someone explain to me how to make one and how to use one effectively

Thanks

2 litre pop bottle, chop the bottom off, wrap inspiration tape around the thread so it seals, job done Smile

The thread on most 2 litre soft drinks bottles is a pretty tight interference fit with the neck on the rad, it just slots in and forms an auxiliary header tank. A length or two of tape wrapped around the thread of the bottle neck helps seal it (and can make it that bit tighter if required). Thumbs up

"Way I was taught" -

Have the coolant to hand and enough bottles of water (for the coolant mix). Open all 3 bleed points - top of radiator, top of thermostat housing and heater matrix.

Pour the coolant in first, then add the water. Fill the coke bottle up nice and high - and keep topping it up! - to be above the level of all the bleed points (this keeps a nice head of pressure and forces air out of the bleed points).

Close them off as each bleed point starts to flow coolant with no air/bubbles. ISTR rad goes first, then thermostat housing, then heater matrix. Once they're all closed off, start up the engine (keep the fluid in the coke bottle topped up) let it run then blip it gently to 1.5-2k, check for bubbles, run until the thermostat opens and the bubbles stop (usually by the time the fans have kicked in for the first time).

Coolant level in the bottle will start to rise as things heat up so keep it high but don't overfill.

Oh, then there's a knack to wiggling the coke bottle so it breaks the seal and the excess coolant drains out of the overflow pipe in the neck into a suitable receptacle (and not all over you/the floor/the engine) Wink

HTH Thumbs up

How does this sound ?

1. Cut the bottom off of a 2l coke bottle, turn the bottle upside down with the bottle top end poking into the radiator header, wrap tape around this to create a tight seal

2. Open up all three bleed points, (Heater Matrix, Thermostat, Top of Rad). Pour in approx 3l coolant and then top up with water so as the level is up to halfway of the up-turned coke bottle.

3. Close off each of the bleed points as it runs through solidly with no bubbles.

4. Turn the engine on, rev slightly to check for bubbles in the coke bottle header. Run the engine until the thermostat opens, the bubbles stop and the level starts to rise.

5. Take bottle off without spilling it everywhere

tape on the bottle neck before you stick it in the expansion tank, no need for any more, otherwise spot on Smile

Pretty much what you have said to bleed it. But you should wait for the coolant fans to kick in after thermsotat has opened.

The Peugeot tool is a radiator cap with a hole in the middle and a bottle on the top. Basically all you're trying to do is get the filler at the highest point and let gravity do the rest through the bleed screws.

Water level in bottle must be over the bleed on the bulk head to push it out Thumbs up
