Having a cooling issue at the moment. Overheating while running, all fans are kicking in no waterleaks to be seen anywhere and there is no sign of water and oil mixing in the water tank or in the oil so hoping nothing major. Just no cooling of the water so possible thermostat or waterpump impeller failure I think.
The question is, if I replace the thermostat and it turns out to be the pump, can i still bleed the system of air properly?

yes, it'll be fine. Engine doesn't need to be running when bleeding the coolant system

really? I always thought you had to get it to a certain temp till the fans kick in so you know the water is circulating and all the air is pushed out the system

yeah "the way I was taught" you need to run the engine 'til the thermostat opens.

It's going in for a waterpump and timing belt/tensioner change on Thursday anyway so I'll just let the garage do it all for me. \saves me any hassle.

use a modified bottle to fit over the expansion tank then fill with coolant (there's a proper peugeot tool for the joCool. Open up bleed screws (heater matrix pipes, 2 on thermostat housing and radiator) and shut them when all the air has escaped and coolant starts to flow through them. Engine is not running when doing this.

Seems to be sorted now. Turned out to be the pump in the end. Impeller failure, pump was still turning from the engine but the blades had worked their way loose from the shaft. Thank God it was nothing more complicated.
Finally have it back on the road after nearly 4 weeks Smile

Can you go through that again step by step for me please ?

Got to change the rad on my GTI this weekend so will need to bleed the system, thought engine had to be running for this
