Author Subject: Head Gasket/Coolant Problem?

The missus has broken down in the rallye, she says there was a pop and loads of smoke, aa have recovered her and said the coolant pipe which meets the thermostat housing has popped off and looks like there was a build up of pressure, does anyone know what could cause this or whats wrong?

worst case is head gasket failure, pressurising cooling system

It could be that it wasn't clicked in correctly and just came loose, but yeah, worst case is coolant pressurisation from the combustion cycle.

mine blew right in half in 2007 on a b-road without light atall at midnight near enough!

just bodged it, refilled and sorted leak and it was ok...

Little update

Got home and had a look about

Now i can't see any mix (oil/water, water/oil etc.)

and the car has never ran hot, the pipe is the one which plugs into the thermostat and a clip slides into/over it, the end on the pipe looks a bit chewed and i dont know whether this was caused when it popped off.

When clipping it all back together as best i could, that small part of the pipe gets really pressuried, maybe because theres not much water left in the system? or something more sinister

Something else to add was when i removed the air filter pipe, there was some drops of coolant inside the throttle body, but this could be cause from the initial pop and water going everywhere and its seeped through the gasket between throttle body and inlet manifold

Any help greatly appreciated as im needing the car for the school run on monday Sad

Try refitting all the pips and as you fill the radiator remove the bleed screw on top of the thermostat housing and once coolant starts to come out hen nip it up.

Run the car up then and see what happens mate, very much doubt its the head gasket.

I hope not Sad, its going for a pressure test tommorow, the AA bloke said there could be a blockage somewhere and its popping at the weakest point

Surely id of had some signs previous to this happening if it was HG failure? like the car running hot or maybe a bit of mix?

what do you think another possible cause could be Carl?

Right bit of a update, test proved not to be HG Big grin , however car did leak a little this morning from around the coolant cap( nissens rad) and upon taking the cap off it sprayed a co siderable amount of water out, so i flushed it through and bled the system and it was only until i blasted the air line around to dry everything that i noticed when blasting the cap area you could see water air bubbles travelling through the pressure release pipe, does this look like the cap isnt sealing correctly?


Also the top of the coolant is "frothy"

might be that the cap isn't being fitted properly, there is two positions on it.

Might be that the cap has gone weak... I had one do that and whenever I got on track as soon as I came into the pits it dumped water all over the floor, new cap fitted from pug, no more problem! :-)

How would the system pressurise though? surely if it had a leak from the cap, it wouldnt allow pressure to build???Dunno

What HG test did you do?

Also, how much water did it throw out, how hot was the coolant and how high was it filled?

Mechanic did a sniff test? some blue solution in 2 glass tubes along with a priming bulb, colour stayed blue

coolant was hot and it was filled high from what i can remember

It will splurge out if you open the cap when its overfilled and hot.

When filled to the line and opened carefully when hot you'll get a hiss on the first position, before you turn to the second and take the cap off.

Does anyone know the correct fill line for a nissens rad, i cant seem to see one Dunno

Yet another update LOL

With the car getting hot last night when the missus was using it, i thought i better unplug the brown sensor to allow the fans to run constant, and keep it a little cooler, however after unplugging and turning the ignition the fan did not spin Angry

Funny because yesterday when the car got up to temp, the fan kicked in Crazy

Need some help with this !

You shouldn't have a brown sensor on a Rallye. The wiring will be there but the sensor was blanked off from the factory.

There should be a thermostatic switch in the radiator that controls the fan.

Definatly a brown sensor on the thermostat housingCrazy

If what you say is true, how do i get my fans to run constant?

Everything points to HG but sniff test says different, when the missus came home from work and i moved the car onto the drive, car was putting out white smoke, not loads but noticable and constant

It'll be getting fixed and sold, had enough now and try cut my lossesSad

Compression test it?

See what that brings up.

Should be around 210psi

Surely would show exhaust gases in the coolant though?

And going for the compression test on saturday Paul, thanks for the common value Thumbs up, gives me some sort of indication what to look out for

Pull off the oil breather hose off the rocker cover and see if there's any mayo. The one with the one way black valve will do Smile

Mine was thick of it when it went, but mine went real dramatically thanks to the c*nt who sold me engine with 2 loose headbolts.

It still ran!

I have no mix on the oil cap, dipstick or coolant, and the sniff test said NO gases in coolant


And yeh jimmy the last thing i need especially close to xmas Sad, wish i'd of kept the astor

Me and the missus on about getting something else, but with me losing so much on the Leon, we cant really afford to lose lots on this one, it already stands me at around £3500 +, but then theres the possible HG to pay for, just might not be viable, plus the fact we cant agree on anythingLOL
