I havnt really posted on here before, but i use pug306.net quite abit (please dont hurt me)

Iv had the gti6 for a couple of months now and im getting a little bit bored, well i lie... its good fun to drive, but i want a bit more power Smile

nothing silly, 200bhp would do me

only thing is, i dont want to spend a fortune, nor do i want to effect the life of the engine too much (im doing 300-400miles a week atm)

so, does anyone have an advice on how to get the extra power?

i was thinking of throttle bodies at first, but £xxxx for 20bhp? Blink

then i thought about trying to find a secondhand turbo set up that someone may be selling, but struggled to find anything.

i heard about cams, but not much.

Iv never 'tuned/modded' a petrol engine before so im not sure what it is that people do, so and help would be great Smile

so far the only performance mod iv done is a stainless cat back exhaust.
with airfilters.... whats recommended? KnN standard replacement ok? or get something else?

Thanks in advance Smile

I would suggest your cheapest route would be:

Deeper piston cutouts
Cams - newman PH2s, something Piper or PeterT inlet regrind (cheapest)
Airfilters don't do much if anything
Remap by Wayne Schofield

Thats about your lot. Personally on a daily hack i'd be looking into ways of getting the maximum mid to high range torque out of it. Don't get stuck on power figure, especially if the torque doesn't increase at all = fairly pointless in usual driving. Cost of that would be around a grand i'd have thought if you do the work yourself.

Turbo / s/c / V6 / TBs all cost fairly big money to get running reliably I think. V6 is the cheapest, s/c is the easiest.

I would actually change to a light weight 7" wide 15" rim, make the brakes better, chuck on the best suspension you can buy, make it lighter and get a hybrid arb before you increase the power. Thumbs up

You can lose 16kg of unsprung rotational mass by changing your wheels and tyres. Makes a massive difference + better fuel economy Wink

theres the proven supercharger setup that rich_w produces, an "off the shelf" package that is near on a bolt on setup which on low boost will see around 240-260 bhp, have a search throught some of the projects as theres a fair few been done now.

ive gone down the N/A route with tb's, cams on a 2.1 steel bottom end, but it depends what your looking to have out of the car, if your doing 300 miles plus a week the supercharger kit is probably the better way to go.

He did say he didnt want to spend ££££ iirc rich_w's kits are around £3,500-£4,000

erm.... can anyone translate this for me? Big grin

i was looking at the supercharger kits too.

how much would it cost for a basic low boost charger if i fit it myself?

im not too keen on having to take the engine to bits, im only home from work 2days a week so ideally i need to get it done in that time unless i take holidays

iv done abit of work on the handling etc, havnt spent too much though, went for coilovers, rainsport 2's, lowered about 50mm

where can i get the ARB from?

and any tips on making it lighter without stripping it out noticeably?

what could i expect from an exhaust, filter, decat, and a remap? Smile

as said, your not going to get near 200 without spending lots of moneys.

supercharger route is best bet if going for 200-260bhp, but its going to cost. the alternative route is change the cams and get it remapped by wayne, but even for that your looking at close to £1k

v6 is 200 bhp, so if you diy it, you can do it very cheaply.

ye a 3.0 v6 conversion will be cheapest if you do all the work yourself. but thats if you can get an engine at a good price from someone

There is no real cheap way to get good power out of the engine without putting decent money into it. A V6 conversion may be the cheapest route to 200bhp, also with around 200lb ft of torque!

If you are looking to use the car for track use aswell as road then there are better ways of spending your money without touching the engine to make it a quicker car. If i started again the first things on my list would be decent tyres, LSD and a good suspension setup/ brake setup. You would probably see more from this on track and road than a few more bhp!

He speaks the truth, the most useable gains in outright speed come from higher corner speeds, decent handling, propper tyres and good driving will see you past many more powerful cars if you do it right. Besides, the straights are just the boring bits that link the corners Wink
