Hey boys and girls,

i have read through many threads this morning regarding cleaning ICV etc regarding hunting.

the car will rev 1000 -2000 rpm like clockwork (not straight away starting from cold, but within a few mins)

the ICV was cleaned very well and degreased, as well as every other inch / sensor in the engine bay.

we had the manifold off, and put it back on with a new standard gasket and sealent, could it be that this hasnt sealed correctly causing this, or the TB gasket.

all other threads state ICV needs cleaning, or possible the small pipe of the inlet which has cracked Confused (will look after work) but before i have to take it to the garage and get bent over(no tools, and cant park the road i live on currently Sad ) any one have any ideas? oddly enough it was perfect before the cleaning session!

not noticibly, its not the quietest of engines with the magnex lol, i can try again tonight, will it be quite obvious if the manifold isnt sealed correctly ?

Yeah as above it's just a paper gasket, it should work fine without sealant.

Weird that it doesn't do it immediately.. I'd imagine if it was a leak/something not sealing up properly it would do it straight away. Is it once the engine warms up to a certain temperature?

thought it was odd too, i did an ecu reset last night went for a quick blast but had the same problems, its litterally like clockwork from 1000 - 2000 every 2 seconds.

got in the car this morning and i thought it was normal, idle was perfect (better than before) got literally down the road, about 1000 metres and there it was again, up and down.

As you know matey, I had similar problem with the revs rising but this was more or less from cold.

I cleaned the stepper but also found the small hose that connects the stepper to the inlet manifold intake pipe had split.

I replaced and the problem was gone.

An ECU reset can't hurt as well while your there


btw, does the car stall or just the eratic revs?

no the car has never stalled (itself Whistle) touch wood, its just the revs, and a bid juddery like the revs are staying on too long when driving around... its like the loud pedal is pushed down and will continue driving itself...

as said earlier, we had the whole inlet off, disconnected to paint it, and then new gasket (cork one from pug) with sealent when putting it back on ... does the TB housing need a gasket / sealent? Confused

and i dont remember by car turning into K.I.T recently. Hmm

Ok Michael LOL

Same symptoms as mine had but I have had the thing apart.

Sounds like you are right about the gaskets causing the issue.

Things like this always happen as well.
You try and make the car go/look better by cleaning them up and they bite you in the ass for the privilege Cry LOL

and even worse is if i had waited for one of phils gaskets it would have been reusable without falling apart Doh

Im almost certain it will be an air leak somewhere Yes I popped a hose on the SC Rallye last week and it was like the hunting issue on steroids, was like riding a bucking bronco when it juddered forward under acceleration LOL

Update on this: been in the garage today to looks at, manifold was sealed fine, gasket fine, sensors plugged in, TB / ICV is off being taken apart / cleaned etc and are about to put it back together, but they said they cant see anything wrong? bloody cars... so simple but yet so not.

If there are no leaks then it could be the connection to the stepper motor. Taking it off and putting it back together may solve it, need to make sure the plug is firmly on and all connections are clean Smile

No joy, the garage took everything apart, the seal on the manifold is fine and no leaks, no other noticible leaks either, and tepper motor was taken off and apart and put back together with no joy, now £40 out of pocket for "labour" and they "cant fix it" i.e Cant be assed!

Any ideas, may have to see if there is anyone up this way that can help on the weekend / change parts over to see if i can elliminate what it is without forking out for new stepper mottor / map sensor etc.

but then again im not sure if i trust these wrench monkies, used them before but this year they are just a bunch of c*nts.

If it is the stepper motor I would expect it to be stalling when dipping the cluch while driving, quite scary when you lose normal steering/braking while pulling up to busy roundabouts!! I had this fault a few years ago.

Not to bring up a dead horse but today went and got in the 6, started her up, and then it died.

The revs just dropped off and stopped dead.

Turn the key, fires up fine, then tails off and dies.

Very strange. Im gona clean the stepper motor & see if that helps, but just wondered what has happened.

It was fine yesterday (drove to heathrow & back 200+ miles) today it just dies whilst trying to drive.

It doesn't fluctuate tho. starts & idles on 1k & just drops off to dead.

When trying to drive it it kangaroo's also...

Any idea's (i'm hoping ICV or Map sensor!)

Deffo stepper valve!

I have had it. The procedure I carry out is.

Disconnect the battery or ecu straight away, whichever suits you best. Then dis-connect the stepper valve. Clean it with whatever you like, I found just a bit of kitchen towel worked you don't need brake cleaner etc.

Wipe any excess oil from where the stepper is housed and then connect and re install. At this point you shouldn't have
re-connected the battery/ecu it needs to be unplugged for at least 20 mins!

Now with mine I found after cleaning the stepper and reseting
the ecu my revs were still up and down between 900-2000 rpm and it would still feel as if the car was " driving itself " however be patient! I found mine took a couple of days to settle again properly and since then it has been fine ever since.

As said above as long as the stepper is fine and are all other
sensors then there shouldn't be a problem.

PATIENTS!!!! Whistle

If all the above fails the burn the bas**rd!!! Shock

There is no flutter in the revs, it idles as usual but after about 10-15 seconds it just dies.

I'm just hoping its still just the stepper motor playing around.

How much are they new ?

@ Oecken - Did you replace it or give it a clean ?

Spray the areas you suspect may be leaking with a solvent degreaser, the engine will suck it in through the leaky area if you have one and the revs will rise as the engine burns the highly flammable solvent. Its a simple fault finder but well proven and cheap.

Sorry only just seen this, didn't replace the stepper no, the cause of this thread was an air leak from a cracked pipe (although it took a good £130 for ecosse to tell me this Meh) and once it and the plastic box behind the inlet which the name of escapes me had been replaced it had never ran or idled soo smooth,(or quiet!) so it musr have been like that since i bought it (jimmy Whistle) but it had completely different symptoms to what you stated, the engine never ever died on me! Hth bud

So today I had some time to start looking at the ICV & Map Sensor.

But before doing anything to them I noticed this...



Would this be causing the problem ?

Obviously it needs to be replaced but would this cause a problem like what I described ?
