I got into my car to go to work and all my gauges except my temp gauge aren't working.

Does anyone know of a common problem or am I going to be head scratching tomorrow?

That was easy. I pulled the shunt fuse out and left it while I checked all the fuses, put it back in and all was fine.

I did try hitting the dash. That usually fixes things like that.

funny you say this as i had a total dash failure but whilst sat in a traffic jam on the M56 about a month ago. i put my chair back to the furhest position and smashed the corner of the dash near the driver side corner with my heel and it all came back to life Laugh my ass off

i also had dash failure when i shorted my clock out. i 5a fuse which controls the ignition and all sorts had gone. simples

Fecks sake mine is doing exactly this at the minute. Tried the shunt fuse and it's not playing ball.

Had each and every fuse out of the box inside the car, including the shunt. Had the battery on and off a few times, only the temp gauge is playing ball. Had all the earths off and cleaned them up but need to check them for continuity next.

Have you actually checked all the fuses electrically?

Also, is it ONLY the temp gauge which is working and the complete rest of the dash isn't?

Hi Stan.

The temp gauge moves off the bottom to somewhere under 70, you can see it move.

Oil level and temparature not working.
Speedo - stuck at 70, or wherever you push it to.
Revs - Stuck at 4500, or wherever you push it to
Fuel gauge - stuck at the bottom.

Spare set of clocks still the same. Found a loose earth today and changed it but to no joy. Also noticed I have no time on the clock by the cigarette lighter.

Haven't electrically checked each fuse, but now you've mentioned it I shall do. Shunt fuse has been out, but nothing seems to die/happen as/when you pull it out and re-insert. Tried waiting a minute, tried ignition on, ignition off etc but nothing seems to happen?

Clocks seen working here prior to engine swap:

Clocks did this on first start after engine swap:

Have I wired something back to front maybe? Like the alternator?

I get dash lights by the way, and all the warning lamps operate on the clocks, but I get no odometer display.

Hmm

It's a tricky one. To my mind it has to be either a dodgy connection or a blown fuse. Although a blown fuse would not operate the dash at all. How long ago was the engine swap?

Was changed last year, but I went to South Africa so it hasn't turned a wheel yet under its own power.

In that case I would disconnect, clean up and reconnect the two large round multiplugs on the n/s inner wing where the engine loom joins the car loom. Yes

Dodgy connections here have been known to cause all sorts of issues and I'm gathering that these were messed with when changing the lump over. Wink

Funnily enough I did that yesterday afternoon whilst following the loom, and it all looked healthy! Cleaned for the sake of it and reattached.

Welshpug, I shall do that.

Gonna get my mate who's an electrical engineer to come have a look see for me but keep the suggestions coming. Smile

I can't believe you haven't managed to solve this yet, what a ballache.

Can you get behind the dash easily to check you are getting continuity through the wires to the clocks?

I'm away again all week so won't be on it till Sunday earliest. Looking at the wiring diagrams it seems the three that don't work all go through the instrumentation control module, so perhaps it is missing a feed.

Need to see the car and bay wiring loom diagrams

I'm still thinking faulty fuse or fuse holder. Yes

I'll have a look through some wiring diagrams in a bit and see if I can trace a common factor for all of these failures...Thumbs up
