Yeah it's a bit of a shit procedure TBH... you should download the instructions off the Rotrex site. Their idea is once it's all hooked up, you fill the tank, loosen the banjo bolt to the charger IN hole. Then using your air compressor (you do have one of those, right? ) and a "rag" wrapped round it you hold the air hose up to the unscrewed dipstick hole (very classy for such an important procedure on such expensive piece of kit) and this will form a seal so you can pressurise the fluid and force it up towards the IN hole on the charger. When you see steady blue traction fluid coming out the banjo, nip it tight. That's the theory. But without an air compressor (and it being sunday, nowhere to hire one) I tried blowing, sucking, using a diesel priming pump, gravity, voodoo.. all sorts.. couldn't get it reliably primed. You guys who reckon you did it with your mouth... scare me! Where did you learn how to blow like that?! In the end, I modified an eazi-bleed and an R888 to give me an "air hose", did the trick. WARNING: I don't know if you realise - I didn't at the time I was spraying the shit round like champagne on the winners podium - but the Rotrex traction fluid is Very Expensive. Think "Unicorn Sperm" levels of expensive. So try to be careful and get the priming done right with not too much waste! BTW, once it's running, you can tell if it's priming properly by whether the cooler is getting warm (it's on the return) and if you slightly loosen the OUT banjo on the rotrex you should see fluid flowing out. What I did was basically what rotrex suggest only I user an old bike innter tube cut in half with one end tied. The other end i jubileed to a socket and made a gasket out of a latex glove.I then connected my tyre inflator and used that by pushing the socket over the dipstick hole. Worked a treat. |

I know it's an old thread but I used one of the small mobile tyre compressors that have the torch built in that plugs into the fag lighter, I just wrapped some self amalgamating tape around the end of the hose until it was slightly bigger than the charger reservoirs dipstick hole, so it would seal, you could use electrical tape aswell.have your spanner or socket on the banjo bolt ready to tighten it back up when it pumps out and have some rag infront of the charger to stop it flowing down and dripping onto the p/s pump. It is a s**tty method for an expensive bit of kit, aswell as feeling the oil cooler for heat you should see some movement/flow of the oil in the reservoir. ________________________________________ andrew315rawson@live.co.ukMoonstone phase 7 gti6 My Project thread: http://www.306gti6.com/forum/showthread.php?id=119992&page=1 |

What a fecking faff that looks like. Got to do that when i get home as the charger fluid needs a change. Not wrong about it being unicorn sperm prices either. Why can't you just raise the reservoir above the charger and fill it that way? or backfill the line? ________________________________________ I'm Si btwNight Blue VW Golf GTD Bianca LBSC Rallye - Track/Road Slag Project Thread Sparkling Silver Mini Cooper D - Super Dooper - (The other half's wheels) |

That's probably the best idea ratman. It's a s**t procedure, and from what I've read the system will find its own oil level and spit any extra out it doesn't want out of the breather cap. ________________________________________ andrew315rawson@live.co.ukMoonstone phase 7 gti6 My Project thread: http://www.306gti6.com/forum/showthread.php?id=119992&page=1 |

Thread revival I know but has anyone tried just raising the tank above the charger till it p**ses out the banjo bolt? Gotta prime mine up for the first time tonight :/ if not I'll resort to the electric tyre pump and rig something to make a seal...________________________________________ Black power baby! Yes mate nearly ready to run all painted up as well got the inlet manifold back from the powder coaters this morning looks awesome but as the letters are still there I want them black so they stand out. Been painting them in with a cocktail stick fiddly as f**k! Lol just gotta fit the manifold prime the charger and setup the drive belt and she's a runner hopefully I'll send you some pics or have a look on fb at some I put on yesterday "Pete Armz Dann"Have got the full rotrex instructions online but think there has to be an easier way that what they say to do it. As long as there's a steady stream of fluid there at the oil inlet it should be fine. May get round to it onight may wait till the weekend. ________________________________________ Black power baby! Think I'll have to use a suitable sized grommet and a length of tube offa tyre Pump. Unless one of my mates can blow hard enough........ ________________________________________ Black power baby! Wrap electrical tape or self amalgamating tape or even parcel tape around the bit the air comesOut of until it's a nice sealed fit when you press on it, ten with the spammer on the banjo bolt ready to tighten it up when it spews out! ________________________________________ andrew315rawson@live.co.ukMoonstone phase 7 gti6 My Project thread: http://www.306gti6.com/forum/showthread.php?id=119992&page=1 |
