Are the handbrake cables the same for drums or discs, or will I need to replace them when I upgrade to rear discs.

they are completely different cables. Why are you going to disks? You will not be able to notice the difference apart from the far worse handbrake.

it has to be a mechanical mechanism, i.e cable.
