I know, my fail. I was so blown away by the raging success of the new site that I kinda didn't bother keeping this up-to-date. SO THEN. IT'S BEEN A WHILE.I've been back through some photos to try and remember where I was, don't think I've missed anything out. The new bracket thing arrived, soaked in Deox-C and wire brushed: Hammerite it up, bracket looks a little better than the old one: Got the ARB sprayed up with some rubberised paint. Most of it got scraped off in the refit of course, but then that's to be expected. Again, found any ol' colour for the brackets to liven them up a little, and refitted to a pressure-washed subframe: Getting the subframe and rack back on was one of those jobs I dread the most - the ones where you need a friend. After *much* swearing and bleeding (us and the steering), got everything lined up properly and attached with shiny new bolts. Annoyingly one of the pipes going to the ram was dripping, so ripped that out and bodged it with some 3/8" brake line. Completely the wrong size and leaked in a different way, but seems to have sealed up (read: ran out of fluid) so not too fussed about that. I have some ¼" pipe (as it's meant to be) now, just haven't had the inclination to replace it. Bolty: Shiny: I also took the opportunity to replace the ARB bushes, old ones looked okay but for a few quid it's just not worth the bother. All loosely lined up ready for the wishbones: The amount of gearbox oil I'd managed to spill over the drive removing the wishbones made it a decent enough excuse to finally get around to changing the gearbox oil, which I'd been meaning to get around to for a while. Nice simple job, carefully unscrew the plastic screw by the battery: ...remove the bleed screw in the nearside arch... ...empty the gearbox via the sump plug below, replace and refill from the top. Simple. By the colour of the stuff that came out, it was due a change. Only £20 for genuine Pug stuff too, so really no excuse not to. Then came MOT time. I had to hope nothing major went wrong as someone pretended we were getting a new forum and took down the current one for a fortnight *right* when I needed it. On one hand, there's not much left on the car to go wrong. On the other hand, there's simply *no way* it can pass, it just seems ridiculous. It does not pass. Fails on four things (well, three. The first is pretty weak): 1) Windscreen sticker encroaches into the passenger's side 2) Windscreen sticker encroaches into the driver's side 3) Knocking from nearside wishbone 4) Handbrake, but that goes without saying The first two were annoying, but more or less expected. Peeled off the sunstrip, done. The wishbone was a *really* annoying one; it'd been absolutely fine until that morning on my way there - van flew round the corner in the middle of the road, I had to bump up and kerb and oh joy. It's now knocking when I change direction. Fantastic. Ball joint? Probably. So take the car home, see what we can do. Under the front and no - not the balljoint at all. Actually just the three bolts which attach the balljoint to the wishbone have been knocked loose. Tighten up, fixed. Pow, three out of four. However, handbrake?! That's not something I can test. I already have new cables, not that. Both sides are equal but poor, which seems odd to me. Have a look at each one, all becomes clear. Siezed handbrake arm thing on the nearside. It only appeared even as that metal bracket that attaches the cables to the handbrake was pulling to one side. Tried my best to free up the caliper, nothing. Bugger. Pretty sure I don't have a spare, but might as well have a look in the garage. Oh hullo. Dunno where it came from, but it's going on. Swap them over, seems a bit more even now. Still won't know until the retest, so time for dinner. Next day, retest time. Somehow, to my absolute disbelief, it passes. "Ooh, but we must warn you your handbrake's on the absolute legal limit". I'll take that, pretty sure that's better than when it left the factory. Green piece of paper = here's to another year of pain and misery. ________________________________________ Membership expiring soon, get in contact on our new little forum project. |

What, you mean *drive* the car? Don't be silly, that's not what it's for. Na, not doing FCS. Got Snetterton 300 tomorrow to see how it's doing though. Annoyingly busy at work for the next couple of months while we move datacentres, but after that it's game on.________________________________________ Membership expiring soon, get in contact on our new little forum project. |

So. Your blower motor seems to have committed suicide in an alarming smokey incident on the A127, and besides it's summer now and you never got round to putting back all the ducting, so it only blows on the windscreen anyway.First up, get some 4" flexible ducting leftover from that extractor fan you fitted in the house. Cable tie that onto a fresh air source - I went for the floor outlet under the passenger footwell. Source some power from those handy cigar lighter sockets you have inside the fake glove box... And wire them into a switch where the old blower control used to be. What you need then is to attach the other end of the hose to that new blower fan you bought from Demon Tweeks a while ago, but never got around to doing anything with. Find a suitable bit of wood to screw it to, then screw that onto one of those ball-jointed speaker brackets you had in the shed. Keep your fingers clear... Finally, just stab some self-tappers into the glovebox lid. Couldn't be simpler, nice fresh airflow to the face when stuck in a sweaty car at Snetterton tomorrow. I agree it could possibly do with neatening up. But that's not important right now. ________________________________________ Membership expiring soon, get in contact on our new little forum project. |

Naa, turned out okay Very good day at Snett, no issues whatsoever apart from the increasingly drippy power steering ram that needs sorting. Just need to rip out the old heater matrix so I can route the air inlet directly to the fans. The connection at the bottom kept coming off and couldn't pull nearly enough air for the fan so the host kept collapsing. One for next week maybe. ________________________________________ Membership expiring soon, get in contact on our new little forum project. |

Yeah, that it's. The Caterham had a bright orange cover on it in the morning and I've actually given the red shed a wash so you couldn't really miss them in the paddock.Only helped out with admin and stuff in the morning and then spent the day fooling around and giving the Caterham some beans. Only met you on track once throughout the day, but I guess that's the beauty of a big circuit and modest numbers. |

Ah shame I didn't know you weren't working, could've taken you out for a ride in the Sweaty Beast!Everyone's timings seemed odd, some times the track was rammed and others it was empty. Still, the ol' trusty Pug was one of only about five cars that made the chequered flag! Although note to self: don't crash on the last lap at Snett, I was still going round the final time and all the marshalled got up and buggered off! ________________________________________ Membership expiring soon, get in contact on our new little forum project. |

Right, got Woodbridge again in a couple of weeks and have a couple of days at home. Impressed as the world of motor racing was with my cooling system and despite the huge leaps forwards it pushed the bounds of car technology, I felt sure improvements could be made. The main issue was getting cool air into the car. There's only one decent place to get it from, and that's the intake the blowers use. Therefore clearly, the blowers have to go. First up, need to bypass the heater matrix. Remove pipework from back of block: And kinda fashion something to block it off. Doesn't matter if it doesn't circulate as it's not part of the main cooling loop, so improvisation as ever. That should do the job nicely. Having been yet again repeatedly smacked in the head by my driver's door, finally I'd had enough and decided to actually fit a check strap to it which I'd gotten from Silky some months ago, but then couldn't be bothered to take the door card off. Pretty weak excuse really, whole thing took less than ten minutes. Lubey lube: And look mummy! I've got one of those "luxury" cars where the doors actually hold themselves open! Ah, she'll be so proud. I also tightened up the hinges, so the door doesn't hang half an inch down when it's open any more. Plush. Don't need you any more, you can get the mastic treatment. Kinda reminds me of Jonny 5 from the Short Circuit films. Then time to look at getting the cool air in. I can run the pipe from the air intake, but then all the ducting in the dash is in the way so I can't get it out to a fan. The fan needs plenty of movement so I can use it to de-mist the windscreen as well, and I cannot for the life of me find one frickin position where it'll all work. Try a cup of tea? Still nothing. What about removing the glove box? Na, still not quite enough room. Oh right, you know what... That made some room. I'll board up the side and figure some way of stopping it flapping about too much later. Next up, decided to do something about the footwells. They're slippery, they've got Paul Walker manifold breach holes in them, and they let an awful lot of heat through. After some discussion, I decided to get myself some thin-as-possible aluminium chequer plate off t'bay. Conveniently found someone selling a 1.6mm thick offcut 1000x750mm, which was exactly what I needed. Cut that in half with a jigsaw, then a bit of trial & error later: File down and round off the edges, bend up the end. Fitted it in position, drilled some holes and popped some rivets through. Not too bad for a bodge job: I didn't bother rivetting it at the far end as the curve can't really sit flat to the metal due to the shape, but an old bit of the edging from around the sunroof makes an excellent rattle-proofer. Since changing my steering rack, I'd had two issues. Firstly there was a leak from one of the pipes on the ram as I'd had to bodge it with 3/8" pipe rather than ¼", but nothing a virtual trip to ebay and an hour or so of swearing wouldn't fix. Touch wood, that should now be sorted. Secondly though the new rack had a thicker diameter shaft from the lower universal joint, which meant the rubber boot hadn't ever fitted on. Therefore I'd had to leave it off, which meant hot air from the manifold pumping straight into the footwell. A Dremel, a sanding drum and a couple of minutes later, and it now fits nice like. I'd also never gotten round to doing anything with my pedals, they were just gloss white like the rest, which was always a bit interesting in the wet. So I masked them up professionally and put on a layer of rubberised paint, which should help a bit. Repeat the chequer plate for the driver's side, taking extra care to make sure you don't drill straight through the fuel lines. For once, I was not "that guy". Not bad for a day's work, more fun tomorrow if the weather holds out. ________________________________________ Membership expiring soon, get in contact on our new little forum project. |
