Love this thread.

As I said, give my cousin a call regarding the cage, he'll do you a fine deal and any profit made he'll devote to his own charity which cares for wounded Ford Sierras. He may even persuade you to adopt one. An XR4x4 would be a good tow car. Anyhoo.

Love this thread, I actually have it saved under my favourites at work

If I adopt one, do I get a small stuffed Sierra sent to me in the post?

I'll get in touch when I've spent five hundred quid on three pounds worth of scaffold poles, hopefully early next year.

Better than that, you actually get to take it home with you. I think he had 15 or something at one stage, it's now down to about 6.

Cage wise he'll actually make a custom one for you I believe. He's pretty good like that.

Next job'll be tidy up the inside over the winter, then once the roll cage is in I'll get the angle grinder out and turn it into an engine stuck to a cage, maybe with a seat for comfort. Might not even bother with single skin...

I tried removing the glass once, failed. Second time around I put a tarpaulin down, chucked a brick through the window and broke as much glass off the tailgate as possible, then wrapped it up ad took it to the tip... miles easier! Other option is a hoover, just suck it all up, thats what I did on my first one.

No need, most of them collected in my knees, palms and elbows.

Although if you think it's a viable business model I'll sell you said shards for £50 posted?

Right, having ordered them over a month ago, my Tarox G88s *finally* arrived, and about time too. You may wish to insert a comment about lazy Italians here. Luckily, I'm off work this week and having spent a few days with the other half sampling a selection of Adnams ales in Southwold I had a day put aside to get them on before Brands on Tuesday; it'll probably be the last trackday of the year for me, so it wasn't one I wanted to have to cancel on account of having no brakes.

After a quick realisation that they were sided (sounds obvious now, but not something I'd ever considered) I did some Googling to figure out which way on they were meant to go, as they obviously had no instructions. Got them on, got the girlfriend to help bleed the brakes through again and job done. No time for a test drive, have to drop the missus off in Enfield.

Couple of hours later, test drive time. You cannot imagine the relief I feel when I brake and the car simply stops - no bleeding ears, no crying children for miles around, no war veterans diving for cover thinking there's some kind of air raid going down. No - just good old fashioned friction. There's the occasional squeak as the car comes to a halt, but nothing worse that most of the poorly-maintained Corsas that pull up at the mini-roundabout by my house. I will happily settle for that.

I also decided to investigate the knocking sound that I've had ever since I refurbed my rear beam. Time has proven that it's not a serious issue per se (ie I've done a few trackdays and everything's still solid) but it's still annoying. My guess is it's the hybrid ARB I've got.

Remembering the pain I had trying to get the caps on the ends last time, I make sure my neighbour's going to be home in the next half an hour or so to help hold one end while I hammer the other; he is - good stuff. Ash's handy head bolt in the end cap, ARB comes out nicely. Oh really...

Hello witness marks all round.

GUILTY MUCH? There's one big shiny patch at one end where clearly the ARB is rubbing against something, and at the other end there's a ring where something else is obviously rubbing. Any other exposed areas of metal are rusty, so quite clearly these are areas in constant contact with something.

Guesses? Suggestions? Much appreciated as ever. I've reassembled it all for now; the only thing I can think is that I never managed to get the trailing arms in as far as they should've been - I think it's meant to be less than a millimetre between the arm and the beam, it's actually a couple of mil. Never been a problem as such, but maybe that means the ARB isn't lined up as designed. When I refurbed the beam I didn't want to scratch off all the shiny new paint I'd put on - no such issue now. I smacked the arm repeatedly with a sledge hammer which seemed to lessen the gap a little - we'll see if that's helped after a test drive later.

Six months after I bought the car I'm thinking it's probably time to clean it - she's served me well, I reckon it's the least I can do. So crack out the pressure washer (hello wet interior), G101, Bilberry and some Tardis (to finally get rid of the masking tape from when I painted the roof four months ago). An hour or so later, all done:

So that's all good, time to go for a test drive. Oh wait, of course.

Well of *course* the tax has expired! Why wouldn't it have?

Turns out the DVLA never received/lost the change of ownership that Dave sent off. We knew this, and were looking into it. However I didn't realise the tax had expired (never having been sent a reminder) so generally it all stinks of a massive sack of fail. No test drive for me as we all know full well what'll happen. Local DVLA office isn't open weekends (why would they be, it's not like we pay them to privide a public service to people who work and pay tax) so it looks like Monday will be a manic rush, as ever, to get down there with a V10, V62, Insurance Certificate, MOT and a cheque book.

Will he get it done in time? Will the wretched DVLA pull it out the bag at the last minute? Will he have to bribe a copper not to report him? Will Tuesday's trackday actually turn out to be a bonding session for the entire DVLA workforce? Or will he just have to accept the inevitable fine for failure to display? Find out, in the next episode of the ShonkMeister General.

Yeah I know the ones you mean Wink

EDIT: Originally I put the beam on without the torsion bars in so I could set the height, so it can't be related to those.

If you tax it online then you have a grace period with which you can use the car until the disc turns up?

Problem solved?

Mine did the same knocking noise after fitting the 30mm ARB, even though I had the arms drilled, just obviously by not enough.

Nothing fell off and it worked fine so I ignored it.

What did you have them drilled out to? 31mm?
