Under light accelaration there is a engine speed knocking ( sounds a bit like big ends, but it is not always there.)

More noticable at low revs, could this be injector related??

on a Standard engine with no modifications

If it's knocking most likely to be bottom end, drain oil, remove the sump and have a look for loads of metal

Thought for a moment this was on the rebuilt engine in your car mate, that was a worry. As Sean says, get the sump off, take off some bearing caps and have a looksee. Wink

no this is an old car that I have just got going after about 18months standing

Why would it be intermittant.
One evening the car was tapping, next day
Drove the car about 15 miles (stop start) with no tapping. 6 hours later the light tapping was back!!

could be a valve, but noise does not seam to be comming from the top of the engine.
It is actually louder inside the car, than with a stethascope on the block, and you can sort of feal it on the pedals!!

steps I'd take then,

Drain the oil looking for bits of metal
hopefully wont find any!

if so take the sump off but get it high enough off the floor to give you plenty of room!

it may just be cheaper for an engine swap
off someone reliable on here...

it doesn't sound cheap what ever it is Sad
