Hi guys,

I have recently bought a V plate 306 gti6 with FSH. Only problem is the timing belt snapped today and obviously gutted. The belt was changed along with water pump etc at the last service, 80,000. My 306 has now done 91,000. The belt was changed by Mercedes Benz in Cheltenham and has been stamped in the book.
Do you think I have any come back on the Mercedes garage as my 306 has only done 10,000 miles since the belt was done and it has snapped already. It was changed on 16/01/09.
Any help will be most grateful

It depends mate.

The dealership will offer warranty on the parts and workmanship they supply - T&C should be on the rear of your invoice. Check these, but suspect they may be considerably less than 10,000 miles & 14 months.

Failing that, there have been successful small claims court actions, but it depends what the actual cause of failure is.

Speak to the dealer first - they may offer a good will gesture. Alternatively, you could consider seeking an independent engineers opinion first, then write them a letter stating you intend to start legal proceedings. Maybe speak to the CAB to see how to best word this.

Good luck.

Thanks guys.

I am going to call the garage on Monday as closed tomorrow. Just think it is shocking that the belt has gone after only 10,000 miles!!!

is it the belt or the tensioners, or a tensioner securing bolt that has gone?

This happened to me, 6 months after the belt was changed. Gates got involved and inspected my car. They found that the tensioner has been incorrectly fitted so not their fault.

Unfortunately, if you were not the person who got the work done, even with a receipt, you have no rights although they may meet you half way as a goodwill gesture.

I only just bought the car on Thursday and it went on Saturday morning. Merc garage will probably just tell me where to go but the engine is going to be inspected by my mechanic this week and I will see where the cause has come from

im sure they fit sim cards to everything nowadays and when the warranty goes they activate whatever the sim is fitted to and make it break.
just happened to my washer 6 days after warranty and forgetting to extend it.
the garage may well do a good will gesture ie you pay for parts they fit it free or vice versa eg.

I think the best I can hope for is a goodwill gesture and anything will be a bonus.

Will be interesting that I am in Scotland and the Merc garage is in Cheltenham!!!

Seems it was a faulty belt that has just snapped. Nothing has failed, just the belt snapping. Has anyone else had this???

Also, I now have a new head to put on this. I have been told by my garage that it is meant to take 15 hours labour ro remove a head and replace it with another as the exhaust manifold is a total c*nt to get off. It seems a bit over the top 15 hours?

Takes me about 5 hours to remove and replace a head on a '6' from start to finish, so yes 15 hours is a bit over the top....Yes
