Hi peeps

Well after owning my 6 for nearly 8 years i have some suspension trouble!

When i accelerate the car pulls quite badly to the right and when i ease off it swings to the left. I was driving down the motorway last week and it actually scared the crap out of me with how voilent it seemed to get at high speed.

Has anyone got any ideas what it could be? The problem only seemed to start after I had my tracking done but they say it is fine, any help gratefully appreciated.

did they actually put the tracking gauges back on the car and re-check? or just say "yeah its fine"

jack both wheels up and see if you can feel any play, top and bottom also side to side.

depends where the play is coming from, easiest way is to get somone to move the wheel and put your hand on the various parts i.e balljoint and should feel play through your hand.

may just need tightening so worth putting a spanner on it to check before changing the item(s)

Sounds like problems i've been having. Replaced, on both sides..

Ball joints
TRE's
Top mounts
Bearings
Wishbones checked for play

Its nearly all eliminated now, replacing the drop links and O/S driveshaft next week and HOPEFULLY back to normal!

I think I've been having exactly the same problem this past couple of weeks. When accelerating it pulls to the right and then when lifting off the pedal it 'returns'. Particularly nasty if on the motorway, as though someone snatches the wheel :/

After jacking the car in the centre and letting both wheels hang there is a lot of play on the passenger wheel. By putting full lock on, to the left, and then getting someone to move the wheel I can see there is excessive play on the bottom ball joint which attaches the wishbone to the wheel hub.

Gonna get it replaced this Friday/Saturday, will let you know what happens.

It is partly due to a failed ball joint on the passenger arm/wishbone.

The fitting on the hub carrier is very worn causing extreme play with the old arm, to the point were it was almost coming free - definitely not road worthy ('Whistle')

There is now slight play with the newly fitted arm, which would be enough to eventually break the new ball joint.

I'm now on the hunt for a front hub with bearing as I don't want to end up back at square one in a months time!

Sounds like you might have a 16mm ball joint in an 18mm hub!

I had this once and it was down to the front bolt holding the 'O' bush on the front of the wishbone. It was loose so was giving play. once it was tightened the problem went away.

Just a thought.

The work on replacing the wishbone was carried out by a local garage, they advised the hub carrier was in poor condition and required replacing.

I've had a look under this afternoon and noticed the hub carrier ball joint clamp bolt hadn't been replaced and wasn't particularly tight, also when I took it off, the thread was in poor condition.

I've fitted a new bolt and nut, direct from Pug, given it a good old tighten and there is only as much play (when rocking the wheel) as the other side. I've also been for a spin and everything seems ok but am still wary as I haven't seen the condition of where the ball joint clamps to the hub carrier.

Are the hub carriers gently tapered to draw the ball joint in or, are they just straight and literally tighten with full contact around the whole of the ball joint connector? (mines a T reg Rallye BTW)

Mr GTI6driver have you managed to sort your prob out yet?

Well a replacement hub carrier with a new bearing, hub and the already newly fitted wishbone has done the trick.

Everything is nice, stiff and very responsive again. So nice in fact that I decided to take a trip to my old man's over Winter Hill late last night and BANG!! A sunken pot hole buckled one of my Mille Miglia EVO 17's.

I'm still feeling the rage right now grrrrr Angry
