Hi. I am in desperate need of some advice.

The wife has a 306 p2 xsi with disk beam and over the last few years I have had a knocking which has been getting worse. The beam works fine and the arms moved smoothly with no neg camber.

1. I replaced the beam mounts - no change
2. I replaced the shocks - no change
3. I replaced the whole beam from a car I broke last year (I drove the car for 6 months before breaking it so i knew the beam is good) I swapped it over complete with the mounts and brakes. Went out for a drive and it still knocksAngry

What else can I change? Its a hard jarring knock that is more pronounced going round left hand bends. It is hardly noticeable when the car has passengers.

To add its definitely not the exhaust or the spare wheel and carrier as they are lying on the garage floor.

Rear spare tyre hanging basket retaining clip - the bit that is adjusted inside the boot ... it can bang on the rear bumper.

Car jack in the boot?
Handbrake cable clips corroded on the underside of the fuel tank?
fuel tank retaining bolts (3 of them) could be corroded?
fuel tank retaining arm bend and knocking on the other retaining arm?
rear arch liner?
bump stops?
rear brake lines not clipped into place?
fuel filler neck ... trace the fuel tank to the 90 degree bend and then follow it up to where it clips into the rear

Thanks but parcel shelf is on the garage floor with the rear seats and the jack.

and the fuel filter is strapped in.

handbrake cables and clips are fine

fuel tank retaining bolts and retaining arm are all fine

rear arch liner is fine

bump stops are fine and the car is standard so never really get used

rear brake lines are all clipped into place

"is there any wear on the rear brake disc face plate? (an over tightened wheel nut could have stripped threads)?" I have replaced the whole beam including the brakes.

The knock is like someone hitting the chassis with a lump hammer! its a proper jolt you can feel in the seat of you pants. I have had the car on a 4 post lift at my local mechanics and we cant see anything obvious.

I will pop out and check the drop links but sure its coming from the rear nearside corner

Will also check for a broken front spring snapped at the top.

Thanks
Adam.

i added fuel filler neck?
check clutch cable is still retained in the clip into the subframe ... if this comes out the clutch cable can catch on a round moving part (not sure which but trace it up and look for wear).

hmm if there is not noise with passengers ... are the rear seats firmly pushed in? middle seatbelt banging around under the rear seat?

Hi thanks for all the help but please read through the topic. The exhaust and the rear seats are on the garage floor.

Have now checked the front springs and drop links. all fine.

I have taken the beam mounts back off and welded them up so now solid. When the fire is out and they have cooled down I will hammerite them and let you know if that makes a difference......

Photos of what? my bad welding? the burnt mounts badly welded and caked in hammerite? or the car, a standard 98 nile blue xsi? all of which are fairly boring?

I just copied these - http://www.306gti6.com/forum/showthread.php?id=115059&page=1

mine do not look quite the same though....

Car is all back together and I don't intend to go back under there any time soon....

Seems to handle much more like my 205's now, I never liked the rear of the 306 moving around. should have done this years ago....
