Just a quick question, I know roughly how a 4 stroke cycle works on an engine but what makes the valves open/close? Are they connected to the timing gear?

is this a serious question?? Huh?

serious reply -

camshafts act on hydraulic self adjusting bucket tappets which act on the top of the valves

camshafts driven by the timing belt.

timing belt driven by the crankshaft. LOL

Yes it was a serious question, I'm just not that clued up on the details of engine internals and it would be nice to understand thoroughly what the more complex threads are about. Thanks for the reply.

They are pushed open by the cam lobes and closed by the valve springs.
