Evening all,

A few weeks ago I fitted a pair of Bilstein B8 dampers and Eibach 30mm springs to the '6.

When I fitted them I did all the nuts and stuff up nice and tight as you do and everything went well, apart from a small gearbox oil leak when the passenger side driveshaft decided to make a bid for freedom. Laugh Doh

Anyway, since I fitted the dampers the car stayed on axle stands because I was doing a few other bits at the same time.

On Sunday I lowered the car back on to its wheels, now this is where i encountered a problem. Now that the full weight of the car is on the front suspension again there is a gap between the top mount nut and the top mount itself. I've tried tightening them up but they don't seem to want to go any tighter, I didn't force them incase I stripped the thread or something.

Obviously this isn't right, so what I want to know is if this was caused by me not lowering the car onto its wheels straight after fitting the dampers, or is it just because the nuts don't want to tighten up because they have nylocked into position?

Should I just completely undo them and try tightening them up properly again or should I replace the nuts?

I hope some of that makes sense, sorry for the long winded explanation. Laugh

Any help would be appreciated. Smile

you mean after lowering the car onto the ground the thread on the top of the shock that comes through the top mount has petruded further through the top mount? meaning more thread is visible?

nuts? dont you mean bolts?

I'd take each one out in turn and wind a tap through the top mount threads.

the washers are still present aren't they?

It's the nut on top of the damper shaft, probably should have explained it a bit better in my first post.

The other three bolts holding the top mount in place are fine, they are done up properly.

forgot to refit the washer under the top mount?

or the washer that sits on top of the mount and under the nut?

Definately put the thick washer back on there under the nuts haven't you, so they're not bottoming out on the end of the thread?

If the thread stops before the cup then something's missing from the assembly but if the thread goes all the way down to the cup then the nuts will just needed tightening. That nut can be hard to tighten if the springs aren't compressed fully off the top cup as you're compressing the spring as you tighten it.

If you're sure they aren't cross threaded then just tighten them down. You may need to use a deep offset ring spanner so you can hold the damper rod with a Torx / hex bit.

There weren't any washers to go under the nut on the damper shaft, should there have been? The shocks were brand new so I would have thought the washers would have been supplied if they were needed. Unsure

I'll have another look at them later in the week and see what's what, probably just need to be tightened properly as Rich says.

There should be a large washer on the end of the damper rod thread under the top mount and then a slightly smaller one on top of the cup under the nut.

They wouldn't have come with the dampers as they are considered part of the mount assembly, but they should both have been there already.

Balls!

Looks like I'll have to take them apart again then, oh joy! Dry

Strange thing is though, I didn't get either of those washers in with the top mounts I bought.

Any idea where I can get them from separately, or do they only come with the top mounts?

they dont come with the top mounting, you re-use the ones from your old dampers.

Finally got my struts correctly rebuilt today. Smile

If anyone needs to do the same then the part numbers for the bits I was missing are as follows -

Control Cup - 5033 77

Larger Diameter Plain Washer - 6949 11

Smaller Diameter Plain Washer - 6946 19

You will need to order two of everything to do both sides.
