Hey guys, had hg done valve seats recut, head skim, all back together pulls like a train but compression still down on one cylinder? Car runs great no missing through te revs or anything to the red line.

Any ideas what could be causing the low compression?

Also loads of water coming out expansion tank top cap like trickling down the side, is it most likely it's just been over filled?

Temp stays at 80 ish and when booting it goes upto about 85, is this normal?

Cheers

It was like this the moment after HG was done without even driving it just leaving it idling for a bit.

Can anyone post a vid of a gti6 or rallye on idle with a exhaust and de-cat

What are the pressures on all 4 pistons? Try putting some light oil down into the cylinder with the low compression and see if that raises it any. You seem Confident enough it's not the head gasket for my bet to be the piston rings.

Hey guys,

went to bedford today didnt manage a lap till it's knocking.

Sounds like main end bearing so back in to be fixed, thought is the higher compression the head is now running due to being like new has put more pressure on the bottom end and from that it's spun a bearing or somthing like that, doesn't knock on idle so hopefully crank is salvageable.

Any thoughts?

Hello, yes the head was pressure checked and skimmed came back all fine.

Compression tests were 90/195/190/195 light oil in the bore brought it up 10 psi, has a ring problem i think, has a crank problem now too.

Its all in hand.

Carl

Defo has a crank problem now ! Sad oh dear, atleast it managed a few sighting laps. I'm trying to stay positive and basically having a recon engine is helping Big grin

Doh I'm sorting my gasket at the moment, it was only pressurising the cooling system but the last time I drove it briefly it must have gone through to the oil as I now have a lovely grey creamy muck that used to be 1k mile old Total Quartz 7000.

idled and revved smooth as anything prior to taking the head off and the big ends are fine (taken the rod+piston assembly out to have the pistons machined...)

I will stick new big ends in regardless seeing as its apart and they only cost

theres loadsa supercharged engines running head skim.. so doubt increase in compression by a point will cause a bottom end problem..

if it as run a while with th HGF it could cause ring/bore damage Yes but this should've been visual on rebuild.

if carls on the case it should be okWink

Exactly the same issue as I had when I had a cracked block. Thought it was the HG so changed that but was still the same with the new one on. Bore had a tiny crack in it that was pressurizing the water system, causing water to overflow out the rad cap. If you run it like that it can cause the oil and water to mix knackering the bottom end pretty quick.

mine was a small mark, didn't look like a crack but was obvious it shouldn't have been there, just looked out of place.

Ah ok, well I'm sure all will be checked for me, are these engines pretty reliable when in a good state? Would that scrap the block if it's cracked?
