Exactly the same issue as I had when I had a cracked block. Thought it was the HG so changed that but was still the same with the new one on. Bore had a tiny crack in it that was pressurizing the water system, causing water to overflow out the rad cap. If you run it like that it can cause the oil and water to mix knackering the bottom end pretty quick.

I also had this with a 309 i had, one of the liners had a small crack in it, symptoms just like head gasket failure

I'm so annoyed! Car is now going to cost me the vest part of 1k to be fixed after the 600 pounds last week for the hg to be done which didn't solve the compression/missing problem the hg was re- done for in the first place, used the car still and after sighting laps so not even driving hard, my bottom end is knocking which is apprently a result of the compression the head now has, I really can't get my head round this!! It's going to be an engine that's cost me 1.5k in 2 weeks. I really don't know what to do or think, so gutted!!

most likely cause of the bottom end knocking was the oil and water mixing when the head gasket went

Oil water hadn't mixed at all, it wasn't that part of the gasket that's gone Sad

A little insight-

Car came to the garage for some repairs, whilst having the car in it didnt run to well, carried out a compression test and one of the cylinders was down, other than this the car ran ok ish, no oil in water or vice versa.

We removed the cyl head to find it had recently been off, three rounded off head bolts etc, the head had been skimmed but not enough, you could see where it had removed the surface and area's where it hadnt, most of the exhaust valves were leaking and needed the valve seats re cutting and a decoke, all this was carried out and put back togther, all the compression's where better and the cylinder with the lowest had increased by 30psi but still not up to scratch.

Advises Rob not to do a track day as at the minute the engine was still repairable, the car left and obvoisely now we have the issue where it has ran the bearing shells out. Still repairable but alot more workj involved as the crank will need to be removed to have it polished or re ground.

Bugger.

Carl

Its a tricky one, its one of those things you just never know, they are not the sort of things you can see unless you strip the engine down so they are never checked, common things that wear them out are poor lubrication, in frequent oil changes giving the engines grief when cold etc.

As the cars done 100,000 if i remember right, you will never know the cause.

A track focused car will always wear thing out quicker than a road car not just the engine, its given more abuse when its used.
