Hello all!

I'm new to this forum and GTi-6s, but not to 306s. I've been tinkering with the more "shopping car" models - I drive an SLDT Sedan and It's great.

Me and Craig, a good mate, decided at around 2AM this morning to buy a GTi-6 off eBay and fix it up, even though nether of us can insure it for a good couple of years!

The auction is here. We payed

Hi mxcraxy and thugpuggin.

We're both 19, driving for about 18 months. Craig has had more crashes than Sunday roasts but no claims, whereas I managed to write off a Hyundai Accent 14 days after passing! Sad

We hope to sell it for some profit, but I, for some sad reason, actually enjoy fixing up cars, especially if they're worth the effort.

I hope we'll get some return from it.

Anyway, a few more pics; sorry there are only four, my phone's memory is abysmal Razz

Hello again.

Had to tow the car to a mate's house on Saturday after dad threw an eppy for storing too many 306s in the garden! I hate towing with a passion.

I also bought a headgasket and stretch bolts today from W M Rollings in Wrexham, quite a tidy price at ~

You should use the proper MLS head gasket from Peugeot and don't get the head skimmed more than 0.25mm. Be very careful timing it back up, although you can advance the cams a touch to get a bit more torque. Be careful!

Any idea what the knocking was?

Hi adam b

The gasket I got has got two holes in it - I hope this is the right one. Hopefully, the new head won't need to be touched other than to clean it.

I'm gunna get an experienced friend to time it up for me, I don't wanna get it wrong! Also, I haven't really touched the car yet, we're hoping to get the workshop so I'll start then. The head has been stripped down so I'm just gunna take the head off.

The SLDT was a b*****d of a job to do, took 5 days, and I can see this taking longer! Does anyone recommend removing the engine to make working on it easier?

Does anyone recommend I get a layered steel head gasket?

I'm only getting it running, I'm not going to charge it or anything, so I guessed that it won't need it.

We finally made some progress on the car! What a day...

With the help of a few friends, we managed to get the head off the car. What a lovely suprise, after spending 2 hours trying to get the bloody exhaust manifold out!

The head (although I have a replacement):

If anyone is interested in the head, once I've salvaged any bits that I may need I'll likely give it away to avoid collecting crap. I guess there might be some value in the cams...

The piston:

The shock, the horror, when we finally got the head off! A massive hole, I'm sure I'm gunna loose a few PSI of compression through there!

The cylinder wall:

This is going to be a real pain. A small piece of metal must of been caught by the piston ring, causing a fairly nasty score. This thing is probably going to use a drop of oil, bye bye emissions! Big grin

The old head gasket:

This should show the difficulty we had removing the head!

What a shame, eh? I thought it was just going to be dented piston crowns, but lo and behold it's a pistons out job! I'll have to call on the old man's experience to avoid damaging it any further when fitting new pistons.

Seeing as I have been offered a full set of pistons, conrods and rings by a few members for

See if someone has a block you can buy with good/better bores, be better in the long run.

You could sell your block, especially if someone wants a bare one to put some 87 or 88mm pistons into. you may not get much for it, but atleast you'd get somehing im sure. Its worth doing the job properly.

You don't reckon the block is salvageable then?

I was really hoping I could fix it up, I like to keep a car with the original engine and at 62k It's in brill condition.

I'll see what dad says about sorting it out, he won't do half a job and he's fixed worse than that before! Head gasket on the side of a motorway, anyone? Big grin

i would source another engine and fit that. You will spend lots of money time and effort repairing that one. Its gonna have to be bottom end out anyway to repair that properly.
I would imagine that was a poorly repaired engine that had faioled previuosly due to cambelt or head gasket etc. Its not an oe gasket so its been apart before

As jonnie says that's not a peugeot head gasket, its a cheap motor factors jobbie, my guess is its had a cambelt snap in its life been fixed but has still had a bent valve which has eventually snapped off, better off with a replacement engine tbh
