Faulty relay (unlikely if it clicks but check it anyway), faulty wiring or broken elements on the screen.

Check for voltage at the screen terminals and work backwards from there.

Oh, I forgot to ask - do the mirrors demist? They are on the same circuit.

They will only demist if the mirror glass is the correct type. If they've been replaced at any point with the wrong type then this feature will not work. Unlikely but something to consider if there is a fault with demist too.

theres a connector under the dash pass side by heater motor, think its red, pull it apart and check if its burnt out on one of the wires, cant remember wire number off hand, but it was quite a common fault. if it is burnt cut the wire either side of the connector and bridge around it, thats easier than trying to replace or repair the connector.

Mine hasn't worked since I got it! Will check for the red connector. mine still clicks and it seems if I hold it in the light does come on although it's not very bright. It doesn't stay on though when i let go of the button.

Could you epoxy it back on then connect using silver paint?
