How can I tell if my engine is a tapper rather than just the injectors etc? Is it loud or do you need the bonnet up with your head in there to hear it? Sorry if it's a dumbass question!________________________________________ Ex Astor 6 ownerAlso an Ex owner of a Bianca 6 Now an ex owner of a 2005 9-3 2.0T 210bhp Aero Swedish Saloon thing!! If the tapping increases with the increase of engine rpm then it will more than likely be a tapper. Injectors tick ever so slightly. Better of getting a vid mate..________________________________________ EX Bianca 6 owner,Now drives: Octavia vRS |

TBH the best thing to do is buy or borrow a compression tester, screw it in place of each spark plug (remove the other leads so it doesn't start)then crank it over for a few seconds, you should have readings from each of the four cylinders all pretty much the same with a reading around 170. If you have even a slightly bent valve this would give a very different reading. Otherwise put a screwdriver to your ear and move it along the rocker cover whilst its running, if there is a bent valve you will get a harsh tapping noise roughly in the area of the bent valve. ________________________________________ Previous Peugeot - 2000(w)GTI-6, Me old China, Supercharged with working aircon! |

Also before performing the compression test pull the plug out of the fuel pump under a flap of carpet under the drivers side rear passenger seat. Dont need any fuel to perform a compression test ________________________________________ Team Peugeot Sport 308 GtiBlack T'99 Gti - may she rest in peace - written off in a shunt on the A329m |

A novice way of checking injectors is screwdriver on them and pop other end to your ear :p________________________________________ cress87 wrote: I'm stopped for speeding on a daily basis but now the police are aware that I live for the 306 they dare not interfere, just sit in their cars quaking as I drive past. |

Not as good as they should be IMO, get a video up of your engine ticking over, we will soon tell you if you have a bent valve or not. Stan. ________________________________________ "Supercharged - 454.1bhp/317.5lb/ft"Peugeot 306 GTi-6 2000 (X), Moonstone |

Ok will do that in the morning! She hasn't lost any power or pull that I can tell, what ideally should they be? Ideally, anywhere between 195-220psi is a good healthy '6' engine. Stan. ________________________________________ "Supercharged - 454.1bhp/317.5lb/ft"Peugeot 306 GTi-6 2000 (X), Moonstone |

Even so, they aren't miles apart from eachother so that suggests that I haven't got 1 poor cylinder?!________________________________________ Ex Astor 6 ownerAlso an Ex owner of a Bianca 6 Now an ex owner of a 2005 9-3 2.0T 210bhp Aero Swedish Saloon thing!! Depends if you had the throttle open as well. I guess the tapping hasn't gone after doing the plugs up again then? What oil is it running on?________________________________________ Nothing to see here |

No I didnt have the throttle open, just turning over the engine! The noise has definately improved, think it could just do with a flush out with an oil change tbh. As Stan said get a video up, unless you actually have someone who knows what they are listening for you wont really know without inspecting the head. The problem with doing a compression test is that in some cases the valve will still be sealing okay but just making a tap as it does so hence they usually run fine as tappers. ________________________________________ Ryan |

I did it exactly what toby said, just cranked it over! My speakers aren't the greatest, but I can barely hear the tapping. Yes it increases slightly towards the end with the revs, but it sounds like the injectors to me.If it was a bent valve it would be much louder? ________________________________________ Racing driver, fighter pilot, astronaut, compulsive liar. |

It is more of a knock than a tap! If it was a big end knock you'd feel it through your feet while driving, and it would be a lot louder than that. That just sounds like a slightly noisey lifter to me, nothing untoward really. If you want to pinpoint which one it is try using a screwdriver as a stethoscope. get a long screwdriver, put the tip on the rocker cover roughly where each valve/cam lobe might be and press the handle hard into your ear closing the flap just in front of your hole (ooh err). You'll know what you're hearing when you hear it, trust me. Do this on top of the injectors as well if you want to listen to them. That doesn't sound like an injector ticking to me as it's a little slow, but then I'm not sure if the '6 uses batch injection fire or sequential. ________________________________________ Ph1 306 GTi 6 | RX8 231 S1 | YBR 125 Cafe Racer | MT-03 660 |
