One of the pads is now completely missing!
I've just bought new disks and pads but what causes the binding?? and how do I free them up?

I noticed recently that there is a grinding noise coming from my rear brakes. I think they have been binding for some time and have worn the pad down really quickly. One of the pads is now completely missing! I've just bought new disks and pads but what causes the binding?? and how do I free them up? ________________________________________ 1990 205 GTI-6 |

I had the same problem. After changing the handbrake cable it still happened so changing the caliper cured it.________________________________________ S Reg Diablo standardsSpec SORNEDR Reg Nile standard spec written off then repaired X Reg Astor in need of TLC R Reg Nile to restore Set of Lions to fit. |

I suspect its the caliper thats seized then. When I set off from cold and release the handbrake its fine, when I come to a junction it grinds after I've released the footbrake. hopefully I can clean it up with a wire brush and grease it. are there any guides or kits you can use to refurbish them? or diagrams on how the calipers operate? thanks!! ________________________________________ 1990 205 GTI-6 |

It's pretty easy to refurbish the calipers, and in my experience they're rarely beyond repair.Firstly, strip the carrier down and remove it, take off the disc and get a better look at what you're dealing with. The piston boot might be split, the piston will likely be dry of grease, and the sliders have 4 boots that should all be inspected for splits. I would advise you to buy a pot of red rubber grease if you don't have any, and pack the sliders and piston boots with this - try and clean as much dried out grease up as you can. Wind the piston right out for easiest cleaning. ________________________________________ I'm Si btwNight Blue VW Golf GTD Bianca LBSC Rallye - Track/Road Slag Project Thread Sparkling Silver Mini Cooper D - Super Dooper - (The other half's wheels) |

When you take them apart you will notice an angled piece that is held in by two spring clips, this gets rusty and can cause the pads to stick. When you remove it to get the pads out, clean the rust off it with a file or replace it, and when it cones to fit it again, use some copper grase on all the parts the pads slide on. Not too much as you don't want any getting on the friction surfaces but you get the idea.________________________________________ R H Davey Welding Supplies. Agree with the above it'll likely be silicon based. Red rubber grease served me ok. ________________________________________ I'm Si btwNight Blue VW Golf GTD Bianca LBSC Rallye - Track/Road Slag Project Thread Sparkling Silver Mini Cooper D - Super Dooper - (The other half's wheels) |
