Hey all, what temp should the oil temp gauge sit and and how long does it take to reach that temp? after a 20min drive (not hammering it at all mind) it goes to around the bar before the 90? is that correct, I've never seen it at 90.

Yup. Should get there much quicker than 20 minutes though!

And rapidly up to 130 if you start abusing it in warm conditions!

Strange, any idea why it takes so long? the engine gets to temp pretty quick since replacing the stat and finally getting it to bleed, just the oil takes a while...

I let my oil warm up by driving under 3000rpm for the first few miles of the journey. Starting from cold it takes about 10 minutes or so to get upto temp (just below 90).

When I was at Rockingham at FCS (hot day) after about 4-5 laps my oil was hovering round the 130 mark Unsure

never taken note of how long mine takes, but it's a lot longer with fresh total oil in it.

I'd guess about 10 minutes unless I drive it harder then it'll be warm within 5 Smile

Thanks for that Rich, very helpful indeed, I shall take a look and see if i have an undertray when i get a chance, if not start looking at other aspects, I know the rad i had is old... really old.. looks asthough its had some leaks at some point.

Also while on the subject of 'oil' when you turn the ignition on and the lights come on just above the oil temp red and white, I take it thats a level indicator?

thanks again

Rich.

According to my engine guru, engines should ideally never exceed 70 degrees for coolant and 80 for oil, sounds low, but thats more than hot enough for the engine tolerances to be right, so engine wear will not be an issue at those temps. This is a race engine we are talking now but the same principles apply. I'd be trying not to let my coolant ever get above 80 in a road car, and be trying to keep oil between 80-90 when driven hard. People running near the 130 mark are asking for trouble. Trust me, I found out the hard way. Film strength is greatly reduced at those temps and unless you are using really good quality oil and changing it very regularly it won't retain its protective qualities for long.
