Hello Guys,

My poor beloved Rallye has developed a cold starting issue. It takes around one minute of cranking the engine for it to splutter into life then all is fine after that, It will start as usual when the engine is warm.

I have replaced the CTS and stepper motor recently.

I will change the air filter, plugs and HT leads next week (anyone know a good/cheap supplier?).

Anyone have an idea about this? Anything else I should change?

TIA

do you have any temperature issues? is it misfiring when it runs from cold before clearing up?

Hopefully it's just electric (CTS or crank sensor would have been my guess), but I have (sorry to say) seen this problem when the headgasket is on the way out.

I'd check cylinder compressions to be sure.

Also, Rallye doesn't have HT leads so you can save yourself money with them!

As Kev has said above, see where the coolant level sits as if its low thats another indication, get the cooling system pressure checked, if the pressure slowly drops after a while and there is no visual leaks then you may be into head gasket territory.

After a pressure test start it up, it will missfire for a breif period then after a blip of the throttle will clear itself, this will be due to one or more of the cylinders having a coolant mist in it.

Just had a look and the coolant is quite low, I will top it up and monitor it.

I was stuck in traffic for 2.5 hours the day before this started but the car never overheated? So this may have caused it

I have just started it up and it took maybe 10 seconds to fire up, Then left it 10 mins and it fired up as usual. Why is this?

I dont know what to do if the HG has gone. Maybe time for another car....? Golf R32?

just fix the hg, not a problem really. do a comp test first though, that was why i asked in my first post about temperature as this is what my old 8v xsi had and it was early signs of HG failure

it could be something tiny though aswell but you have to look at everything else first before buying parts. do the tests first before splashing out on sensors
