It's not so much the coilbound length that matters - it's the spring preload, making it go coilbound to early will result in what you experienced - pressure going through the roof at high revs when the ports choke and seals popping out.

Mine was popping the seals at idle Shock I think there was far to much preload and the pump was giving the engine all it had!!

LOL

If you hang on I'll get some graphs up to show what I mean.

Right - these are just arbitary graphs, they're not from an engine, just a quick set of fluid flow calcs:

Anyway, assume this is a standard engine, once the bypasses choke, the pressure ramps up against the relief spring, which pops off and give a nice gentle rising curve thereafter (the gradient of the curve is altered by various designs around the port to make the blowoff more progressive, but hey..) :

Now, if you fit a longer spring of the same rate, you'll have more preload and the oil pressure will look something like this, as you can see the initial part of the graph ramps up faster and for longer before the relief blows:

And this is what happens if you cock things up, and install a spring/spacer so long, that even when the relief valve blows, it's still choking the ports:

As you can see, you end up oily.

Oily indeed

Its a shame its such a pain to keep stripping the pump and trying different size shims really.

Sorry to bring up an old thread but its kinda the same subject. If an oil cooler is added, with the added extra length of oil pipes will there still be enough oil pressure by the time the oil gets back round to the cam and crank spray bars? cheers in advance.

Yeah easily. There's nothing to worry about.
