Well I started dismantling my rear beam yesterday evening and continued with it today.

My beam has been split before so it was quite easy to get apart. I have a torsion bar stuck in the offside trailing arm and a ARB lever stuck on nearside!

Since im putting a hybrid ARB in when ive finished this needs to come of really. In going to heat it up shortly and see what happens. Failing that I will just buy a new one. Is it possible to have the other torsion bar pressed out?

My main issue is a part i need, I got a rebuild kit from Miles but this part isnt included for whatever reason.

Its a silver runner/washer for the suspension arm seal - it fits over the arm shaft and buts up against the trailing arm.

Does anyone know what the part number is?

Unsure

Here is a pic of it - oh and you can see I have had a catastophic failure on the offside of the beam, check out how f*cked it is - now I know why my handling has been so cack recently. The beam is damaged to on that side so I will have to scrap itSad , fortunately Hovis has a spare I can pinchSmile

whats the deal with these? Do they slide on easy or do they need pressing on?

Ok tried heat on both the ARB lever and torsion bar stuck in trailing arm, no luck with eitherDry

Not to bothered about the ARB lever as I can buy one although it seems like a waste of 35 squid!

Is it possible to get the torion bar pressed outUnsure

Just tried the ring on a new shaft, they're pretty tight.they are thin though so should tap on,I can't go forcing things though as I may sell the kit and shafts.my beam was compleatly shot so I just salvaged the arb and torsion bars.I just smashed them through the cups with a copper mallet as it didn't matter about the rest of the beam,so I can't help you there,Welshpug is the kiddie with these ,sure he'll be able to advise you.

Bit of a trek but I can get that out for you with my press, or if it won't budge I have a big copper hammer that seems to do the trick. I'm in Southampton though.

Well another day of sodding around with this, got a refurb beam of Hovis, (thanks again dude) and set about taking the bearings out. Got one end bearing out and thought to myself since im gonna be sending the trailing arms down to a local specialist to have new arm shafts pressed in I might as well send the beam down with them to have the remaining bearings pressed out and the new ones pressed in.Whistle

Then, if they can do it tomorrow, I can start putting it all back together again along with hybrid ARB.

One bit of good news is that it turns out one of my rear dampers that I suspected had failed hadnt at all - its just because the offside beam end was in a ver bad way as you can see in the pic belowRoll eyes

Thanks again Miles,

yeah this is the beam that was on my car - this is heading straight to the scrap yard. The one Hovis sorted me should do the trick its nice and fresh at both ends and is having new bearings pressed in.

When I started taking the beam that was on the car apart, the near side arm shaft was the one that came out first. The outer bearings had fresh grease on and the surface on the armshaft was reasonable, the inner bearing was there but the surface on the arm shaft was in a very poor way.

The offside of the beam was in a different league, ive been driving around with my suspension this mashed for a while thinking it was

A. A fooked damper B. Beam mounts(now replaced) or C. Top mounts(now replaced).

Its funny how my car recently passed an MOTRoll eyes look at the state of it

Without doubt the beam has been in a poor way for a very long time - even when the muppet that lowered it had it apart I suspect evidence of problems were plain to see. Unfortunetly, even though I was there whilst he did it, I didnt know much about these cars or the rear beams as id only had the car a short time and hadnt been a member on this site for longDry

Still on the bright side - when its done and back together it will be an epic improvement!Smile

Ok, sent my rear beam and trailing arms down to a company near to me called PTS Developments to get new trailing arms pressed in and new bearings pressed into the beam. I couldnt get the time of work so my dad helped me out by taking it down there and picking it up for me.

Anyway got home from work just now and they have done a right royal f*uck up on pressing the new bearings inAngry

On both side the outer bearings have been pressed into the beam 5mm past the shoulder when I sent them a cover note requesting they be pressed to a depth of 0.5mmAngry

On one side the outer bearing has been pressed in with the writing facing inwardsAngry and both have been pressed in in such a way that the bearings are clamped down and dont rotate in the shellAngry

And these people call themselves Citroen and Peugeot specialistsRoll eyes

God only knows what state the inner bearings are in, I cant see them because of all the fresh grease!

One good thing is that they managed to get the new arm shafts in to the correct depth and un damaged.

So now Im gonna have to take time of work to go down there, hassle my dad to pick me up from work and go down there with it and moan. They are gonna have to order new bearings and its all gonna take ages - what a bunch of c*unts!Angry

If you need a specialist somewhere local ish, try Dave at TI Motorsport in Pangbourne - he does rally prep and has been doing PSA stuff for longer than I can remember.

Ok, for those of you that missed my thread in the 'General' section, the beam was taken back to the people that bodged it to have another set of bearings pressed in!Roll eyes They then bought in mickey mouse bearings (instead of replacing the Pug bearings I supplied them from Miles) and proceeded to fit them at the wrong depths againRoll eyes

However, popped down to Miles and he sorted it for me finally. Got back from his unit at about 4.40pm yesterday and rebuilding commenced!

Everything went according to plan - id cleaned up and lubed all the splines on the torsion bars/beam and it all went in with minimal effort after a few attempts.

The hybrid ARB was a little more tricky and took a few goes to line up the ARB lever with the holes in the trailing arm but cracked it after about 4 goes.

No wizz boltsLOL

I had planned on sending the coilovers back to the factory for a rebuild but after examining what I thought was the offending damper causing crazy handling (which just turned out to be a knackered beam) I decided there would be litle point, so.......

Road test - amazing, a complete transformation in feel. I was running a -60mm drop and this has now gone up to -40mm, Im still considering whether to pop the torsion bars out and raise it a tad again but for the time being im quite happy. The hybrid ARB is definetly a worthwhile addition. It corners much flatter but I found that the best improvement is that now I can lay some good power down whilst going round a corner instead of just spinning it away on the inside wheel respectively.

So all in all very happy apart from tonight when I tried adjusting the ride height of my coilovers at the front to suit the rear and the offside threaded coil seat got stuck on the thread and I mullered all the nothes on it trying to free it up with the special spanner adjusterDry I think the thread just got gunked up with road dirt and grime.

Fortunetly the difference in ride height is only about 7 or 8mm so it doesnt look ridiculous. I will just have to order a new one and butcher the old one off. Another little job for an idol weekend. Just glad its all back together for the time being.

Many thanks to everyone who has provided input for this - I couldnt have done it without you - especially, Hovis for providing me with a torsion bar puller and a donor beam, Miles for fitting the bearings properly and Welshpug for his FAQ and input on other bits n pieces - much respect! Thumbs up
