lets hope we've found the right shafts to be able to do a cheaper wide track conversion.

If you have access to a range of vehicles to check the shafts, have a look at a non turbo diesel van's shafts, I think they may have the right number of inner splines to use the gti6 outer cv joint, if the cv joints aren't the same. I think the turbo diesel version will have the wrong number of inner splines if the out cv is not a match for the 306 hub.

All from what I have been able to research, but never had the time to go looking at the actual items to date.

got drive shafts now just need to get new cv because the hub fitting was wrong but the splines are the same as the 306 so should just swap straight over.

Does anybody have a drive shaft apart? Do the CV's come off the shaft, ie, circlip fitment? if i can get hold of a centre piece, ie, the longest part of the shaft, and assuming they are the same length both sides, i might be able to get some lengthened shafts made up with the splines to use the original outer pieces and CV's. Is there a standard extra length that this would have to be made to? 40mm longer, or more because the driveshafts dont necc sit horizontal?

Having a further punt it does seem that way, it is from a reputable drive train specialist though, and literally for 1 offs. Ill have to make further enquiries.

It'd be less expensive to have some stock shafts extended, are they solid on the GTI6?

nope, tubular Smile I only comment that its rather expensive as its costing a hell of a lot less to have some shafts shortened for a V6 conversion.

the essential process would be similar, i.e cut shaft make insert to fit in it then weld back together, just happens that a V6 shaft needs to be shorter, easy enough to add a section in.

Im sure modding the stocks shafts, to either lengthen or shorten them is much cheaper, the price i have got is to get some completely new 'middle' sections made as im sure you are aware, must be stronger to do it that way, but id expect that unless you are running massive power, or in a rally/rallycross environment they'd be overkill.

And off topic, that 'maxi' on 205gtidriver sounds like a tool, you are more than helpfull and knowledgable and an assett to the site/sites.

...if you have sufficient time on your hands, go to a scrapyard and find a 1.9 (non turbo) citroen dispatch van (or equiv Peugeot / Fiat) and get one of the shafts of it - compare the shaft to the 306 gti and you should be able to then confirm if it is the +40mm required.

If it is, then you have a much cheaper solution than having bespoke items made. I had a quote of circa

the dispatch van ones are 40mm longer just need to check the cv fits as the van one has to many splines and is larger so won't fit the hub. if anyone wants a pair i have a pair for sale.

Disopatch CV's dont fit the 306 hubs, you may be able to fit 306 hubs into the 306 Hub carrier though, that'd give you 5 stud fixing if you wanted LOL

Looks like they'd be good candidates for a mix and match set though, the shaft is long enough and looks to have the right splines on the end to take a 306/Xsara/Berlingo/Partner CV joint.

quote:
Dispatch Diesel, Van, (non Turbo), 1.9 8v, ABS/Non ABS.

compressed length = 647 mm / 929 mm
splines on inner joint = 24
splines on outer joint = 27

C.V. Joint

ABS (if applicable) N/A
Internal splines = 34
Snap ring located on shaft
External splines = 27

306 2.0 16v ABS hatchback

compressed length = 600 mm / 886 mm
splines on inner joint = 24
splines on outer joint = 25

C.V. Joint
ABS (if applicable) ABS teeth = 29
Internal splines = 34
Comments Snap ring located on shaft
External splines = 25

no need to go to a scrap yard to find that Big grin

what I did notice on the Larger pugs is that the outer spline is about 10-15mm longer, that is included in the compressed length do they may not be that much longer overall.
