I have just changed the N/S (shorter) driveshaft, and decided to replace the seal while I was at it, part 312144 which I have confirmed comes up for my VIN. However, when I reassembled it leaked oil, and on disassembly it was clear the inside of the seal had folded back on itself as the driveshaft was inserted, hence the leak.

Now the interesting thing is that the new seal is a very different design to the old one:

-Old seal: black rubber, pretty much one solid lump with a seperate plastic ring which clips into the seal.

-New seal: Orange rubber, with a gap between the outer ring and the seal, so that the seal is fairly free to move and easily folded back

Just wondering if anyone else had any problems with the new seals?

I would advise extreme caution when fitting the shaft that it remains perfectly aligned and centred when inserting into the gearbox, and makes as little contact as possible with the seal on the way in...

I have put back the old seal for now, will see whether that holds oil.......

After a search on this forum regarding this problem, has a fix been found for this?

I think i need to replace my Driveshaft seal (O/S as oil is coming out between the speedo housing and driveshaft)
Anyone else got a better idea as to what could be causing the leak?

Because i tried to find a solution first lol, and seeing as nobody replied to this.. i revived it! Big grin

But what do you mean not inserted fully flush? When i put the shaft back into the gearbox i pushed in fully and done the securing nuts up!

The op said the old seal and new seal looked a lot different. The o/s and n/s seals are different are they not?

I replaced my n/s seal about a month ago and had no problems at all. I had bought both seal though and I'm sure they were different. Maybe he used the wrong side?Dunno

I've just got two from Andrew Page, small one was £2.50 and large one was £4.50 and they're Febi Bilstein ones with the original part numbers. I put them in flush last time and have done this time, didn't leak Unsure

That's because the original seals are no longer available they were superseded by another seal which is black/orangey in colour. The original seals which have the separate white plastic ring built in them are no longer available from Peugeot.

I have never had a problem with using the new type of seal though, in fact I prefer them. Yes

Are the N/S and o/s different yes?

As I say I got two and the boxes definately were marked differently with one saying N/s and the other o/s. I'm sure the o/s was shaped like a castle nut(if that makes sense). Ill have a look for the o/s one tonight to check i'm not making this up.

I fitted mine flush , tapping it in to place with a very small hammer and was gentle as the ds was inserted. No leaks that i can see.

yes one in smaller than the other

mine are brand new but the older style with the white plastic teeth on it

usually i use just a large socket over them and tap them in carefully, always done them all the way but i have heard people say don't do them all the way but never personally had issues

I've always tapped them in evenly all the way round with a rubber mallet and never had a problem.

I also fit them flush and they haven't leaked. There is a set depth to fit the rear crank seal but not the driveshaft seals as far as I know. Smile

OE will be more than that even a full trade discount
Pattern one's I;ve never found anything like Pug sell, the O/S one is allot deeper and as WP has said about not fully pushing them in they are allot wider so sit in the right place, mind it's not that important as long as the seal fit's on the D/S flat

I never like the old white plastic ring design, was poor from the outset
