Afternoon all.

This afternoon I finally got my new front suspension bits fitted, it only took me about 3 months! Laugh

Anyway, I've just put the wheels back on and when I started to lower the car down off the jack, I noticed that the wheel was getting stupidly close to the spring. See pictures below -





I can't even fit my fingers between the wheel and spring!

I'm pretty sure that this isn't normal.

Now, the way I interpreted the instructions, that came with the KW's, about how to set the ride height to it's highest setting was to wind the spring down so that there was a gap of 15mm from the bottom of the thread to the base of the spring perch (15mm was stated in the instructions as the minimum amount of thread which should be left).

Now, have I been a complete 'tard and got the instructions the wrong way round, and should I have wound the spring up the shaft to achieve a higher ride height? I think this is most probably the case but I would just like someone to confirm it for me. Going by the instructions again the maximum amount of thread which can be exposed is 55mm.

I think I have been seriously affected by the heat because I seem to be doing everything wrong today!

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Smile

perfectly normal that mate. the lower you wind it down the lower your car sits LOL

Mines about 5mm from the tyre LOL but there is no reason for it to touch so it will be fine.

i have about 3mm space between spring and tyre, so you will def. be fine Wink

and the higher you wind it, the higher your ride height


kw v1 with 17*7 rims on et15, i have put a spacer of 3mm to make sure i have enough space (so et12 in the end and no more problems)

All depends on your offset.. ideally run ET 16 on 17" wheels for a nice clearance.. No chance of catching really.. As the wheel will always be perpindicular to the shockYes

P.S Anyone else think they need stronger helper springs?

helper springs arn't there to aid spring rate thats why they are fully compressed. take the load off momentarily and they can only go one way which is what they are there for to keep everything seated

Cheers for clearing that up, I obviously didn't read the instructions properly.

My Turini's do have an offset of 16 so I think I should be ok there.

Just need to wind them up now I suppose.

A stronger helper spring can give a more progressive feel.. which in turn could give a bit more reboundYes Especially on V1's

I know its main use it to keep tension in the strut on full extension using such short springs..

anyone know what poundage the KW main springs are?

The problem with using stiffer helper springs that don't compress fully when the car is on its wheels is that you'll have a very soft spring rate unless you alter both the main and the helper.

Do you just wind the seat up higher then?

Mine have about 5mm between the tyre and strut too, I thought it was odd but checked a mates golf and his is the same, I was a bit worried about winding them down some more Laugh

347lb is bloody hard if thats what they are.

Not that you can do it on 6s but i run h&r camber bolts on mine at 1.3neg i wouldnt want to go any less TBH just incase they slipped if i hit a f*ck off pothole Dry Tyre against strut = Crazy Blink

Nah, but i've got different coilovers, softer springs and it runs at about a 35mm drop max. Been airbourne a few times with no problems.

You can get the springs from anywhere, not just KW. Just measure the diameter/length/number of coils/thickness just so you know what you currently have.

I want to get my Kw's down a tad lower then they are, fully wound down and still not low enough, could i just take the helper spring out ?

yes you can, loads of people drive without helper springs around here

and yeah, kw is hard as f***
(got a kw v1 with the springs of a v2)

Not if they unseat when jacked up Dan, the whole point of helper springs is that they let you run a shorter main spring.
