watch how you go about cleaning your stepper motor. I got away VERY lucky with this. The collar went in first and was big enough to stop the spring getting in under the valve, but soft enough to just bend and not cause any damage.

Whoa was that the one I sent you? I suppose I should have made it more clear that I never used it.

How the hell did that happen? Was that just from pulling the shaft out when cleaning? I can see the sleeve and spring but wheres the end bit? Unsure

nah that's the old one I wrongly fitted. I think it wound itself out and crapped its pants. I still haven't received that one, so I think royal mail have lost it. the other peice was in the inlet manifold, fortunately it was too heavy to be sucked up.

you took the inlet manifold off to clean the stepper? easier access but risk of accidents!

i just removed the breather pipe which i found had a leak where it joins the main induction hose going into the throttle body so going to upgrade to silicone me thinks

I replaced the plastic junk on my XS with a 6 manifold, not realising the difference in the stepper mounting. having put it back together (with shortened fuel rail mounts, bent a/c pipe and re-mounted rad top hose) and thinking it would all be hunky dory, it wouldn't idle. immediately I blamed the stepper, came here to read some FAQ's on cleaning the things and spotted a part that I was completely missing. went back to take the stepper out ready for the one justinaccurate sent, and found pieces of it missing. I recovered the phallus from the manifold using a magnet-on-a-stick thing, but couldn't find the other pieces so took the manifold off, and there they were. had a good look around the valve they were against and no damage has been done as far as I can tell. the collar is too big to have gotten into the seat, and the spring didn't get far into the throat because the collar was in the way.

the car's back running again now and using the stethoscope I couldn't hear any unfriend;y noises from the head, so all's good. in fact the noisy exhaust-side tappet was very quiet listening to it this way, so I had a quick look around and found a loose spark plug. happy chappy!
