After getting a replacement drivers side window switch that I confirmed as working, I decided to have a look and find out why mine was being tempremental.

The most common fault with these units is that the joystick stops working; certain directions stop working and you find yourself having to push down on it to make anything happen

First thing is getting it out. Use a screwdriver with a bit of electrical tape wrapped round the end to avoid gouging the plastic or door handle on the side and pop it out. The drivers side switch has 2 connections going into it, one of which has a strange clip you have to sort of rotate to get out. Dont just try and pull it, the clip lifts itself out

You will see the unit is made of 3 sections. using a small screwdriver again, gently lift the flaps to release the 4 catches holding it together.

Hold it with the joystick at the bottom as you open it, there are small bits of plastic that like to fly out

You can see the complicated circular contact on the right hand side. This may need cleaning - so contact cleaner or cotton wool and WD40 Whistle

On the left hand section, the circular plastic piece lifts out to reveal...

a spring!

This spring is why your joystick is feeling a bit tired and loose

Give it a bit of a stretch and replace it, making sure you put the plastic circular bit in the right way up. Check that the joystick feels more solid, if not repeat and eventually replace back in car to test.

There may be another reason why electric mirrors stop moving - they sit on rails that the motor turns and sometimes they fall off. If you can hear a motor when you operate the mirror but no movement, this is probably what has happened.

It's just a case of popping off the mirror plastic cover and releasing the glass (held on by a wire clip) and then re-popping the ball joint back in

Good work Thumbs up

To add a note on the switches; The phase 2 and 3 switches with the automatic winding have different pin-outs on the connector so aren't interchangeable but it's only the bottom half with the electrics in that are different.

If the top half of your switch is physically broken and can't be fixed by the method above but the bottom half is fine then you don't need to find the correct one. You could get either one and replace only the top half.
